PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this standard will be able to explain the operation of auxiliary auto-electrical equipment and harnesses in an automobile and identify the various types of auxiliary auto-electrical equipment and their components. The learner will be able to plan, prepare, fit and wire-up auxiliary auto-electrical equipment. The standard involves the application of both the theory and skills to achieve these autotronics-specific outcomes.

  • Plan and prepare for fitting and wiring of auto-electrical equipment.

    Explain the operation of auxiliary auto-electrical equipment and harnesses of an automobile.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Auxiliary auto-electrical equipment is identified and described in terms of their functions and operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The components of auxiliary auto-electrical equipment are identified and described in terms of their functions and operations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components may include:
  • Alarms, immobilizers, combination of alarm and immobilizer (ECU, door sensors, shock sensors, window sensors, pressure sensors, transmitter and audio system).
  • Audio systems-radio/tape, CD changers, speakers, car phone/cellular (transmitter, receiver, knowledge of transmission process and antenna).
  • Central locking system-actuator.
  • Emergency vehicles warning systems.
  • Auxiliary lighting systems.
  • Accessories (electric winches and two-way radios etc).

    The fitting of auxiliary auto-electrical equipment is described in terms of specific operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operational requirements include fitting locations, harness locations, component locations, wiring and specifications.

    Plan and prepare for fitting and wiring of auto-electrical equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant documents are sourced and used in preparation for fitting of auto-electrical equipment and to check relevant mounting procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A components list is compiled so that the required components are available for work to progress without delay. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hand tools are identified and selected and test equipment is selected and calibrated for optimal performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Auxiliary equipment components are identified and made ready to prevent delay during fitment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The automobile is prepared and made ready for fitment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This could include disconnecting the battery, vehicle PPE, removing the centre console from the dashboard.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Fit, wire-up and commission auto-electrical component. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    This includes the fitting of alarms, immobilizers, combination of alarm and immobilizer, audio systems, central locking system, emergency vehicles warning systems, auxiliary lighting and accessories.

    Tools and equipment are used according to standard procedure and manufacturer's specifications.

    The method of removing and fitting of trim is described and demonstrated as per procedure and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The mounting of auxiliary auto-electrical equipment/component is described and demonstrated according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The wiring of pre-wired auto-electrical harnesses is described and demonstrated according to manufacturer's specifications and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The assembly of new auto-electrical harnesses is described and demonstrated according to manufacturer's specifications and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The routing and concealing of auto-electrical harnesses is described and demonstrated to manufacturer's specifications and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    All work is performed with due regard to safety practices of the workplace and the safety of the environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes the use of personal protective clothing (PPE).

    Test fitted auto-electrical equipment and diagnose problems.

    Test equipment to test fitted auxiliary auto-electrical equipment is identified and selected according to the work to be performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Problems on the vehicle are diagnosed according to procedure and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Vehicle is repaired according to standard procedure and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Trim panels are removed and refitted according to procedure and with no damage to vehicle.

    All work is performed with due regard to safety practices of the workplace and the safety of the environment.
