PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners are able to locate, diagnose and repair networking and on board data transfer systems on an automobile from circuit diagrams, as per instruction, in accordance to procedure, and/or with the aid of service manuals and special tools in a safe and aware manner. Learners will also demonstrate theoretical knowledge about the purpose, variant and common causes of failure with networking/data transfer systems.

  • Interpret an automobile networking/data transfer diagram.
  • Locate and diagnose faults on networking/data transfer systems.
  • Repair and replace faulty networking components/wiring.
  • Explain the purpose, variants and common causes of failure with networking/ data transfer systems.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Interpret automobile networking/data transfer diagrams. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Diagrams and symbols may include but are not limited to CAN, VAN, LIN, fibre optic systems, all parts of the data transfer/networking system, block, functional and wiring diagrams as well as components such as control units, sensors and actuators that are linked to them.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct diagram for the system is located and identified in relation to the specific system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The formats of diagrams are discussed in terms of their differences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The diagram of a networking/data transfer system is read and interpreted using its key components, symbols and terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The basic flow of data/information through the diagram is shown or explained in order to understand the functioning of the system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Links to applicable/associated circuits are identified and explained in order to understand interrelationships between systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Locate, interpret and diagnose faults on networking/data transfer systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Possible faults may include earth (ground), open circuit, short circuit, high resistance joints, loose connections, faulty terminator resistors, control units, wrongly assigned terminals/connectors, kinked cables and excess networking current draw. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct test equipment is selected for each testing/diagnosis task. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Test equipment includes test probe, continuity tester, LED test lamp, multi-meter and oscilloscope, and computerized diagnostic equipment, optical testing device and any other manufacturer-specific or other recommended networking system test equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Trim and related components are removed and fitted according to procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The test equipment is correctly set up for the tests to be carried out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The testing is performed according to procedure and the results are interpreted correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Test equipment is shut down and stored correctly after use.

    Faulty wiring/data transfer cables/connectors are repaired/restored to working condition using accepted procedures.

    The system's functioning is checked and confirmed after repairs are completed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The need for networking systems is explained in terms of new technology being installed on motor vehicles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic types of networking/data transfer systems are explained and typical applications suited to each are given. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of networking may include CAN and variants thereof, LIN, Fibre optic, resistive or voltage coded systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common causes of failure of networking systems are listed and/or identified in order to better understand the common problems of the system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Causes of failure may include but are not limited to faults with network wiring and connectors, faulty control units (hardware and/or software), loss of feed/earth/critical supply/wake up or similar signals to control units.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A report is prepared and written as per standard company procedure.
