PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this standard will have knowledge of auxiliary harnesses. This is a wide-ranging standard that involves theoretical knowledge and the application of both the theory and skills to achieve these autotronics-specific outcomes. Learners will be able to perform a variety of tasks from interpreting circuit diagrams, identifying and discussing components of the harness, assembling, fitting, removing and repairing the harness.

  • Read and interpret auto electrical auxiliary circuit diagrams and construct circuits.
  • Test automobile auxiliary harnesses.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    All tasks are performed bearing in mind health and safety requirements. Safety includes work area safety, electrical safety and electro-static safety, personal protective equipment and standard safety procedures when assembling, fitting and repairing automobile harnesses.

    Demonstrate an understanding of aspects related to auxiliary harnesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All the components of a wiring harness are identified and described in terms of their functions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include but are not limited to conductors, insulators, connectors (key-way, non-symmetrical), terminals, sleeves (shrink, harness wraps, loom tape), straps, clips and fasteners.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Conductor size calculations are performed to determine whether a wire can carry the current load. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to quantities and units used in conductor size calculations, use of tables (electrical copper conductors and permissible voltage loss).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different types of auxiliary equipment are identified and described in terms of their electrical systems requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment includes but is not limited to trailers, caravans, audio equipment, beacon lights, sirens, spot-lights, fog lights and air horns.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Read and interpret auto electrical auxiliary circuit diagrams and construct circuits.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different types of circuit diagrams are identified, named and described to indicate the purpose for which each is used. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Electrical symbols and indicators as they are used in circuit diagrams are identified and explained to show their differences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Circuit diagrams are discussed in terms of their related aspects. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Related aspects include terminal designations, additional wiring techniques, insulation removal, terminal lugs, self-clinching cable straps, high-temperature areas and heat shrink sleeving.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Test automobile auxiliary harnesses. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    The appropriate equipment must be chosen for each test performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Auxiliary harness testing equipment is identified and described in terms of their uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Testing equipment includes but is not limited to continuity tester, multi-meter, probes, test lamps and jumper wire.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Testing equipment is used according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Testing equipment readings are interpreted according to manufacturer's instructions and standard procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Wiring tests are performed according to standard procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tests include but are not limited to resistance test, open circuit test and short circuit test.

    The procedure for testing faulty auto-electrical harnesses is performed according to standard procedure.

    Test results are interpreted and corrective action taken where necessary.

    All equipment is used and stored as per manufacturer's instructions and standard operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Planning and preparatory procedures are conducted to prevent wastage of time and effort. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Auto-electrical hand tools and test equipment appropriate to the task to be performed are obtained to ensure that operation is performed efficiently and the consequences of not using the correct tool are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Task to be performed includes fitting and removal of auxiliary harnesses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Automobile auxiliary harnesses are removed according to procedures outlined in manufacturer's workshop manual. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Damage to vehicle trim is avoided. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The procedures apply to trailers, caravans, audio equipment, beacon lights, sirens, spot-lights, fog lights and air horns.

    Automobile auxiliary harnesses are fitted and routed according to standard procedures.

    Appropriate adjustments are performed to components fitted according to manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Adjustments include focusing headlights and spot lights.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Assemble automobile auxiliary harnesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Auto-electrical hand tools, test equipment and components appropriate to assembly of the auxiliary harness are collected and assembled to ensure efficient operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Components include but are not limited to conductors (ensure that conductors are selected according to current rating and colour code), connectors, terminals (ensure that terminals are selected accurately to the appropriate current rating), strapping, clips and sleeving.
  • Tools and equipment include but are not limited screwdrivers, wire strippers, long nose pliers, side cutters, crimpers, soldering iron and solder and cable knife.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of not using the correct components are described in order to emphasise the health and safety aspect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The planning steps for assembling and constructing a harness to replace an existing one and the generic steps for harness replacement are described as per standard procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Assembled harnesses are checked using testing equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work area is restored to a safe and serviceable condition.

    Harnesses are tested to identify the fault. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Testing may be with test equipment or visually for conductor damage or connector/terminal malfunction.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Repairs to connectors, conductors and wires are performed according to standard procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Soldering and soldering techniques are described and applied in so far as they relate to repairs to auxiliary harnesses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes but is not limited to soldering irons; soldering devices (pencils, guns); soldering flux, cleaning and tinning the iron.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation for all work done on the vehicle is prepared to ensure that customer and workplace have detailed records of the work carried out.
