PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Wellness is a condition of satisfactory balance between the physical, emotional/mental and spiritual parts of the individual human being. Individuals each have an own wellness continuum that fluctuates between ill and well, but each should aim to remain on the well side of the continuum. Thus even those with chronic illnesses such as Diabetes Mellitus or Cardiac illness may achieve wellness in terms of their personal continuum, once their rehabilitation programme has been personally accepted. This applies to all conditions even to those with paralysis or absence of limbs.

This unit standard enables the learner to establish the workplace case for providing wellness awareness programmes. It is essential knowledge for people entering or wanting to enter into a career in wellness, or who currently occupy positions where they have acquired the wellness portfolio within their scope of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the expected benefits from the implementation of wellness awareness programmes in the workplace. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Computer literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Self-care management is described as a health improvement benefit of wellness awareness in terms of improving own health and prolonging working life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Chronic disease management is described in terms of preventing health deterioration and the development of secondary complications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain how wellness awareness programmes result in commercial benefits for the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Productivity of the employee is explained as a commercial benefit to the company. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The benefits and disadvantages of absenteeism and presenteeism are explained in terms of commercial benefit to the company. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The utilisation of healthcare benefits to maintain wellness is explained as a commercial benefit of wellness awareness programmes implemented in the workplace. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain how wellness awareness programmes benefit the workplace by increasing employee morale. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An attitude of 'showing' we care as a morale booster is explained as a benefit to productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Coping mechanisms or behavioural change are explained in terms of improving self-image, thereby increasing morale and productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The need for Corporate responsibility is explained in terms of a successful implementation of wellness awareness programmes. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing the Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification with the agreed ETQA principles. Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
