PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to prepare themselves, their workstation and their client for salon services and to finish off those services.

A person credited with this unit standard will be competent in:
  • Organising and preparing the workstation for a salon service.
  • Cleaning the work area.
  • Checking and maintaining furniture, tools and equipment.
  • Receiving and consulting with client.
  • Finishing off a salon service. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Identify disorders of the skin and hair at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    A hair salon may include but is not limited to: a nail salon, beauty salon or a beauty spa.

    Organise and prepare the workstation for a salon service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge of and consistent application of safe work practices and emergency procedures in regard to the provision of salon services is demonstrated according to Occupational Health and Safety regulations/requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reception and point of sales area, service cubicles, workstation, walkways and other work areas are maintained in a safe and organised manner according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All routines are performed safely, effectively and efficiently with minimum inconvenience to clients and staff, according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment, tools, materials and products are organised and prepared in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The workstation is cleaned and sanitised in accordance with industry standard hygiene levels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Waste is promptly removed and disposed off according to organisational policy and occupational health and hygiene regulations/legislation.

    Spills, waste and other potential hazards are removed from floors and cubicles according to organisational policy and health and hygiene regulations/legislation.

    Equipment, linen and consumable materials are maintained and stored according to organisational procedures and health and hygiene regulations/legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Furniture, tools and equipment are arranged, cleaned, disinfected and used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

    Types of products to be used in the service are arranged and prepared in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

    After-care products appropriate to the service provided and to the client are selected and applied according to manufacturer's instructions.

    Home-care advice appropriate to the service is provided to the client in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Retail products appropriate to the service provided and to the client are promoted in accordance with organisational requirements.

    A follow-up appointment is solicited for the service to be provided and in accordance with organisational requirements.
