In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Connect typical single-phase motors, equipment, components and accessories used in air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation systems with the aid of electrical drawings.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already able to communicate effectively with others. Use of tools and measuring instruments, identification of mechanical and electrical equipment and components.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Motors, equipment components and accessories:

Motors, with their associated control gear are those found driving compressors, fans, pumps etc. and are of the shaded pole, permanent-split capacitor, split phase, capacitor start capacitor run, single and multi speed type. Solid state, voltage operated and current operated start relays. Simplex electrical diagrams with combined power and control circuits, not necessarily complying with I.E.C. requirements, and suitable for the domestic or light commercial air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment at hand are to be available.

Relevant details about components:

Operating voltage, microfarad capacity, normal current, whether normally connected to other components in series or in parallel, whether contacts on relays are normally open or normally closed, whether motors are single or multi-speed, are single phase or 3-phase, whether capacitors are of the starting or running variety.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify the electrical items/components in the machine, as represented by the symbols and lines
OUTCOME NOTES
Identify the electrical items/components in the machine, as represented by the symbols and lines on the diagram.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. All symbols or lines on the diagram are correctly named and the item/component represented thereby is pointed out in the machine.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Using the diagram, connect the equipment, the components and the power source to the terminals

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Connection diagrams are correctly matched to the unit at hand.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. All terminals are correctly identified.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. All connections are made correctly.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Provide relevant details about any of the components

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The details are provided for each component/item without errors, and in accordance with its manufacturer's specification.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Connect equipment and components according to electrical diagram

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Wires supplying power are connected to the correct terminals and equipment without trial and error.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. There are no stray strands or loose terminations.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Describe the sequence of operation of the machine as shown on the diagram

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The operating sequence is correctly described, starting at any point on the diagram.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.
The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Importance of correct identification and application of components and terminals and application of correct voltage to avoid components malfunctioning or being destroyed.
Realisation that symbols used on drawings represent actual components but may not resemble them physically.
Knowledge how components in the machine react to power being applied or removed.

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
