PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Obtain the operating parameters of simple vapour compression refrigeration systems and transfer refrigerant gas or liquid from one container into another without undue release into the atmosphere. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Explain the operation of actual vapour compression refrigeration systems and the function of system components and accessories. Use refrigeration, air-conditioning and ventilation trade tools and instruments. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Reading thermometers for measuring air, liquid and surface temperatures.
Reading a hygrometer (electronic type).
Explaining commonly used terms such as temperature, heat, relative humidity, pressure, vacuum.
Connecting a manifold to a system.
Reading pressures and vacuum gauges (incl. electronic types).
Determining superheat and sub cooling.
Stating and reporting possible reasons for abnormal observations.
Connecting the manifold by opening, closing, front seating, back seating and cracking of valves.
Obtaining liquid or vapour from a refrigerant container.
