116702  Identify, handle and sample refrigeration oils for analysis, and demonstrate how oil can indicate the general condition of a refrigeration system  Level 3  NQF Level 03

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Explain and demonstrate the precautions to be taken when handling refrigeration oils and explain and demonstrate how the condition of the oil can be used to indicate the condition of a refrigeration system.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already able to communicate effectively with others.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Mineral and non-mineral refrigeration oils
Synthetic and non-synthetic refrigeration oils

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify refrigeration oils.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Containers of different oils are correctly identified as being refrigeration oil or not, and synthetic, mineral and non-mineral are correctly identified.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain the precautions to take when handling and storing refrigeration oil.
OUTCOME NOTES
Explain the precautions to take when handling and storing refrigeration oil to prevent it from becoming contaminated and unusable.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Explanations about how opened containers are protected from contamination are in agreement with manufacturers' standards and industry norms.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Demonstrate the precautions to take when handling and storing refrigeration oil.
OUTCOME NOTES
Demonstrate the precautions to take when handling and storing refrigeration oil to prevent it from becoming contaminated and unusable.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The methods demonstrated to show the precautions to take when handling and storing refrigeration oil to prevent it from becoming contaminated and unusable are in agreement with compressor and oil manufacturers' recommendations.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Assess and report on general condition of refrigeration system from observing oil.
OUTCOME NOTES
Assess and report on the general condition of the refrigeration system from observing the oil in the compressor sump sight glass.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Explanations about the lack of or the presence of foam as an indication of the condition of the system, following observations, are in accordance with industry norms.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Explanations about the level observed in the sight glass are correct as being acceptable or not acceptable for the operating conditions/capacity.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Explanations about the colour of the oil observed as being satisfactory or not are correct, and are in accordance with oil and compressor manufacturers' standards.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Explain how oil sampling for analysis must be carried out.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The explanation given regarding precautions to be taken to ensure external contamination of the sample does not occur is in line with the requirements of the testing laboratory and good refrigeration practice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. The consequences of contamination of the sample are listed and explained.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6
Demonstrate how oil sampling for analysis must be carried out.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The demonstration given regarding oil sampling is in line with the explanation given and with good refrigeration practice.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. The reasons for oils sampling are listed and discussed.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. The care to the taking of the sample is explained.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Any person wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, who may appoint a moderator to be present at the assessment.

The assessor must have knowledge and experience of air-conditioning or refrigeration.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
The types of oils that exist. What happens if incompatible oils are mixed? The consequences of contaminated oil being used. The meaning, in terms of general system condition, of foam in an oil sight glass and of oil darker than new oil.

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems
  • Selecting the correct sampling materials
  • Determine the position where to take samples

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage myself and my activities
  • Prepare, plan and select tools and equipment

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information
  • Reading and interpreting instructions

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology effectively and critically
  • Appropriate use of tools and instruments

  • UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems
  • Be aware of the effect of oil contamination on plant performance

  • UNIT STANDARD NOTES
This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard 116702, which is "Identify, handle and sample refrigeration oils for analysis, and demonstrate how oil can indicate the general condition of a refrigeration system", Level 3, 2 credits.

Questions must be answered and demonstrations performed within a reasonable time.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
