PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with knowledge to function as a committed nurse practitioner in both hospital and community settings in aspects related to basic nursing, by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and identifying abnormal/deviations from the normal activities of living, providing the appropriate care.

Secondary purpose:
  • To provide the South African community with enrolled nurses to improve the health status of individuals, families and community especially in the disadvantaged community.
  • To provide S A community with nurses who will meet the objectives and requirements of the SANC.
  • To lay a better foundation for further studies when required.
  • To assist in the various fields of health care settings e.g. clinics. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners who register for this qualification can:
  • Have grade 10 or 12;
  • Learn from previous experience (1st year), class attendance and practical field.
  • Learn from written material and community exposure.

    1. Perform basic nursing care e.g. hygiene, nutrition, elimination.

    2. Solve problems by searching for alternative strategies including referral for problems beyond her scope of practice.

    3. Solve problems by exploring situations.
  • Give reports when necessary.

    4. Generate alternative strategies to deal with these problems at primary level.
  • Use knowledge and experience to offer suggestions for solving problems at a community level.

    5. Show knowledge of connectedness of factors influencing achievement of optimal health.

    6. Show awareness of cultural diversity.

    Assessment criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    1. Engages in problem based learning and critical thinking effectively.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    1. Continuous assessment by unit personnel and the teaching personnel using the assessment tool.

    2. Formative and summative assessment are integrated by using tests and assignments.

  • Projects: assignment; case study; ethical problems; group projects.

  • Accompaniment and self-evaluation.

    Summative - includes: Internal and external examination, curricula evaluation and tool to evaluate the course. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The Enrolled nursing certificate is recognised in other countries under the same qualification e.g. Britain. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    The qualification is equivalent to the second year of the enrolled course.
    Upon completion of the course, an option to continue with the next Diploma level is possible. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    A system of second examiners is used within the institution e.g. practica.
    The SANC provides its own system of moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
  • Our own staff is used as assessor for the practica and internal examinations.
  • SANC provides the written external examination papers and assesses/marks the papers. 

  • REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
