This qualification does not replace any other qualification and is not replaced by any other qualification. 

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the underlying music knowledge, skills and values in order to:
  • Become competent and professional musicians who will either be employed; or
  • Be self employed in the music industry. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

    Recognition of prior learning:

    RPL will be recognised through a process of assessment of previously obtained skills and knowledge.

    Learners who register for this qualification:
  • Can fairly read and write music; and
  • Can effectively participate in an ensemble through an interview and audition, upon which learners who intend to register for this qualification will submit written evidence which certify that they have undergone prior learning which might have been formal, non-formal or informal.

    The learner must satisfy national policy (Report 191) requirements. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    Specific Outcomes:

    The level 4 graduate must be able to play a musical instrument.
    The qualifying learner must be able to participate effectively in an ensemble by playing his/her instrument.

    Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Use of science and technology science.

    2. Identifying and solving problems.

    3. Organising and managing.

    4. Being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts.

    5. Effective communication and working with other people. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment Criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    Learners will perform a minimum of six songs, sight read, play or sing technical exercises, scales, modes, and present a quick study guided by the syllabus. More details on assessment are described in the syllabus.
    Learners are assessed as a group.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Learners are exposed to science and technology when they play musical instruments and using computers.

    2. Qualified learners are able to solve problems by using creative thinking as they improvise on given music themes during ensembles and practical lessons.

    3. Qualified learners help in organising concerts, ensemble rehearsals and take part in music competitions.

    4. Qualified learners are developed through music to become culturally and aesthetically sensitive.

    5. Qualified learners learn and apply Communication skills as they work together in ensemble classes.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:
  • Continuous assessment:
    60% takes place in every lesson in a form of tests, class work, homework, assignments, group or individual projects, etc.
  • Summative assessment:
    40% takes place in the form of formal examinations on completion. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The National Certificate in Popular Music is comparable with other international qualifications such as Certificates in Contemporary, Light and Jazz Studies. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Articulation with qualifications offered at other institutions:
    The National Certificate in Popular Music is comparable to Contemporary, Light and Jazz Studies Music Certificates or qualifications offered by other institutions.

    2. The qualifications towards which the National Certificate in Popular Music graduate may proceed to are:
  • NQF level 5: National Certificate in Popular Music Performance; or
  • National Certificate in Popular Music Sound Engineering; or
  • National Certificate in Popular Music Composition; or
  • Diploma in Light Music; or
  • Diploma in Contemporary Music. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    A system of second examiners within the institutions will be used, together with the system of external examination at exit levels to the qualification. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they will also be involved in moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Each institution will use its own staff as assessors in a manner that is accommodated within the quality management system of the institution.
