This qualification does not replace any other qualification and is not replaced by any other qualification. 

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with work experience in Composition. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

1. Learners who register for the qualification are graduates who hold an NQF level 5 National Certificate in Popular Music Composition.

2. The qualification only recognises learners who have done and passed all subjects at NQF level 5 (as mentioned above) because there are no formal learning taking place at this stage, instead all learners have been deployed to do practical work relevant to their qualification for the period or duration of 18 months. At this stage the institution will constantly liaise with workplace supervisors in order to get feedback on the progress of a learner.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment Criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    Learners will be observed, evaluated and be guided by their workplace supervisors who will thereafter report back to the learners' institution on the learners' progress.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Learners use computers and different musical equipment to compose, write, arrange and produce music.

    2. Qualified learners deployed in the workplace, communicate and work with other people effectively.

    3. Qualified learners are able to identify and solve problems using critical and creative thinking.

    4. The qualified learner is able to organise and manage various activities related to his/her profession.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:

    As at this level the learner will have completed formal schooling, he/she will be doing practical work in the workplace. Therefore instead of formal written examinations, tests, class work, assignments, etc, the learner will be subjected to continuous assessment which will be conducted by the workplace supervisor in a form of observation, evaluation and guidance hence:
  • Continuous assessment: 100% or 95%.
  • Formative and Summative assessment: 0% or 5%. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The National Diploma in Popular Music Composition is comparable with other international qualifications in Music Composition. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Articulation with other qualifications offered at other institutions:

    The National Diploma in Popular Music Composition is comparable to other Music Composition qualifications offered by other music institutions. Composition graduate may proceed to higher institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    There are no formal examinations taking place at this level, learners are doing practical work for 18 months. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they would also be involved in moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    There are no formal examinations taking place at this level, learners are doing practical work for 18 months.

    If there were formal examinations, each institution would use its own staff as assessors in a manner that is accommodated within the quality management system of the institution. This would also apply to outside assessors. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015. 

    NOTES 
    As per the SAQA decision to re-register all provider-based qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework that meet the criteria for re-registration, this qualification has been re-registered from 1 July 2018. N/A
