PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with music knowledge, skills and values so that they become competent performers who can either be employed or self-employed in the music industry. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

Recognition of prior learning:

RPL will be recognised through a process of assessment of previously obtained skills and knowledge.

Learners who register for this qualification can:
  • Read and write music;
  • Play an instrument (including vocal) at level 4, because they have already passed and obtained level 4 qualification in Popular Music or any other equivalent qualification.
  • This qualification also recognises prior learning proven to be relevant through an interview and audition, upon which learners who intend to register for the programme will submit written evidence that they have undergone formal/non-formal or informal prior learning that is relevant to this qualification.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    Specific Outcomes:

    1. A qualified learner is able to perform any popular music style or genre effectively accompanied or unaccompanied.

    2. A qualified learner is able to play and improvise any given music theme applying improvisational devices learned.

    3. A qualified learner is able to demonstrate that he/she has knowledge, skills and values to run his/her own music business accordingly.

    4. A qualified learner is able to effectively play his/her instrument in a band/ensemble.

    Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Use of science and technology science.

    2. Identifying and solving problems and organising and managing activities.

    3. Communication and working together as a team.

    4. Understanding the world as a set of related systems.

    5. Being culturally and aesthetically sensitive across a range of social contexts. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment Criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    1. The learner will present a minimum of six songs of which two must be his/her own original compositions.

    2. The learner will play and improvise given music themes as required by the syllabus.

    3. The learners' knowledge and skills will be assessed through tests, class works, assignments, projects etc.

    4. The learner will participate in an ensemble, where his/her role as instrumentalist or vocalist will be assessed.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Qualified learners use and play musical instruments and such as computers, synthesisers, p.a system etc.

    2. Qualified learners are able to solve problems by using creative thinking as they improvise on given music themes during ensembles and practical lessons. Learners are responsible to organise internal concerts, help to manage and lead ensembles.

    3. Learners get an opportunity to communicate and work together during ensemble classes. Music is a universal language in its own, learners communicate with audience or listeners every time they perform. Identify and solve problems such as missing rehearsals and performances.

    4. Qualified learners, as they learn and perform international music styles or genres such as jazz, rock, gospel, rhythm & blues, become aware and understand that the world is a set of related systems.

    5. Qualified learners are developed through music to become culturally and aesthetically sensitive.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:
  • Continuous assessment:
    Takes place in every lesson in a form of tests, class work, assignments, group or individual projects, etc. 60% weighting.
  • Summative assessment:
    Takes place in the form of formal examinations on completion of each semester. 40% weighting. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The National Certificate in Popular Music Performance is comparable with other international Certificates in Contemporary Music Performance. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Articulation with qualifications offered at other institutions:
    The National Certificate in Popular Music Performance is comparable to Contemporary, Light and Jazz Studies Music Certificates and Diplomas offered by other institutions.

    2. The qualifications towards which the NQF level 5 National Certificate in Popular Music Performance graduate may proceed to are:
  • National Diploma in Popular Music Performance or a Degree in Music. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    A system of second examiners within the institutions will be used, together with a system of external examination at exit levels to the qualification. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they will also be involved in moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Each institution will use its own staff as assessors in a manner accommodated within the quality management system of the institution. This would also apply to outside assessors.
