This qualification does not replace any other qualification and is not replaced by any other qualification. 

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with work experience in Sound Engineering after they have qualified in NQF level 5 National Certificate in Popular Music Sound Engineering. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

1. Learners who register for the qualification are qualified sound engineers (graduates) who hold an NQF level 5 National Certificate in Popular Music Sound Engineering.

2. The qualification only recognises learners who have done and passed all subjects at NQF level 5 (as mentioned above) because there is no formal learning taking place at this stage, instead all learners have been deployed to gain practical work experience relevant to their qualification (which is sound engineering) for the period or duration of 18 months. At this stage the institution will constantly liaise with workplace supervisors (where learners have been deployed) in order to get feedback on their progress.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment Criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    Learners will be observed, evaluated and be guided by their workplace supervisors who will thereafter report back to the learners' institution on the learners' progress.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Practical and on-hands work experience will help to develop the learner's skills and knowledge which will also impact on social and economical development.

    2. The qualified learners, because they are deployed in the workplace or industry, are able to communicate and work with other people. Working with people will help learners to develop an ability to identify and solve problems using critical and creative thinking.

    3. The qualified learner is able to organise and manage various recording sessions and other relevant activities, as the work environment will provide a learner with these opportunities.

    4. Qualified learners are primarily able to use sound technology such as sound modules, workstations, mixers, computers, etc.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:

    As at this level the learner will have completed formal schooling, he/she will be doing practical work in the workplace. Therefore instead of formal written examinations, tests, class work, assignments, homework, etc, the learner will be subjected to continuous assessment which will be conducted by the workplace supervisor in a form of observation, evaluation and guidance hence:
  • Continuous assessment: 100% or 95%.
  • Formative and Summative assessment: 0% or 5%. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The National Diploma in Popular Music Sound Engineering is comparable with other international Sound Engineering qualifications. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Articulation with other qualifications offered at other institutions:
    The National Diploma in Popular Music Sound Engineering is comparable to other Sound Engineering qualifications offered by other institutions.

    2. The qualifications towards which the National Diploma in Popular Music Sound Engineering graduate may proceed to are further qualifications in Sound Engineering.

    The learner is able to continue with learning on his/her own in order to further enrich and develop himself/herself.

    As the learner has accumulated enough knowledge, skills, values and work experience, he/she has better employment opportunities or may start his/her business. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Work place supervisor in liaison with institution. Where professional or statutory bodies are involved in determining the curriculum, they would also be involved in moderation. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Please note that there are no formal examinations taking place at this level, learners are doing practical work experience for 18 months.

    If there were formal examinations, each institution would use its own staff as assessors in a manner that is accommodated within the quality management system of the institution. This would also apply to outside assessors. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015. 

    NOTES 
    As per the SAQA decision to re-register all provider-based qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework that meet the criteria for re-registration, this qualification has been re-registered from 1 July 2018. N/A
