PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide the qualifying learner with the necessary advanced technological and visual skills, experience and value systems to apply user knowledge and expertise at an advance level to the fields of Design, Fine Arts and Industry. The qualifying learner to be suitably equipped to enhance cross-cultural interaction, utilising opportunities in the market effectively and participate in life-long learning. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

Recognition of prior learning:

RPL will be recognised through a process of assessment of previously obtained skills and knowledge.
  • Learners who qualify for this Diploma can present a National Certificate in Art: Culture and Arts or the equivalent certificate and a portfolio that satisfies the requirements for this advanced level of competency.
  • Complete an interview and/or assessment. A personal evaluation is done to determine whether the prospective learner has the appropriate aptitude, attitude and generic capabilities to successfully complete this qualification.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    As stipulated in the current policy document 191 (DoE). The qualifying learner must successfully complete the Level 5: National Certificate in Art course and a further three semesters of practical experience gained within the field of specialization in Industry.

    The qualifying learner assessed as competent at Level 5 Art is able to:
  • Communicate effectively on a visual level and solve problems through creative thinking and technical skills.
  • Think creatively and divergently.
  • Use technology effectively and responsibly.
  • Organise and manage himself/herself effectively in a work situation.
  • Use computer technology at an advanced level.

    2. Critical cross-field outcomes

    The qualifying learner assessed as competent at NQF Level 5 is able to:
  • Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made.
  • Communicate effectively as a responsible individual in a group.
  • Develop entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • Organise and managing himself/herself and one's activities responsibly and effectively.
  • Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluating information.
  • Explore education and career opportunities.
  • Develop thinking patterns involving creativity.
  • Use technology effectively and responsibly in all the art equipment and materials to their disposal. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The qualifying learner assessed as competent at NQF Level 5 is able to:

    1. Relate learning to group situations.
  • Relate knowledge gained to further training.
  • Relate learning acquired to a range of aesthetic disciplines.
  • Relate learning acquired to industry standards.
  • Make a positive contribution to Art and Culture within industry.
  • Engage in effective problem solving by effectively and critically collating and evaluating information.
  • Carry out effective problem solving within a group that displays an understanding of the inter-relationship of concepts and social constructs.

    2. Solve problems by means of divergent thinking.
  • Solve problems through discussion.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:

    Continuous assessment is done in order to obtain and give proof of competence. This mechanism ensures that learning did take place and knowledge was imparted. Evaluation is done through practical activities and assignments.

    The learners will be accountable for self-evaluation exercises for the duration of the learning programme.

    Summative assessment is conducted through an internal assessment and verified by a group of qualified assessors and moderated by the specific employer/s who have employed the learner over the 18 month period. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Articulation with Technikons and credits towards degree courses.

    2. Qualifying learners will be able to enrol for Higher Education: Level 6: Diploma in Design studies and Art related fields.

    3. Qualifying learners will be able to obtain specified credits towards appropriate degree courses. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • All summative examinations must be internally assessed and verified by a group of assessors and may be an approved practitioner from industry.
  • External moderator/s are appointed to ensure standards. 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Selected educator staff per institution to be used as assessors in a manner that acknowledges the quality management.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015. 

    NOTES 
    As per the SAQA decision to re-register all provider-based qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework that meet the criteria for re-registration, this qualification has been re-registered from 1 July 2018. N/A
