PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide the qualifying learner with basic skills and an acceptable level of competency to enable entry into the Level 5: Art and Design course. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

Recognition of prior learning:

RPL will be recognised through a process of assessment of previously obtained skills and knowledge.
  • The qualifying learners who qualify for this qualification can present a Grade 12 qualification or the equivalent thereof.
  • Complete an interview and/or assessment with portfolio. A personal evaluation is done to determine whether the prospective learner has the appropriate aptitude, attitude and generic capabilities to successfully complete this qualification.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of formal elements in art.
  • Communicate on a basic visual level.
  • Show an understanding of the interaction amongst various art disciplines.
  • Demonstrate a level of competency in the various disciplines.

    A qualifying learner assessed as competent at NQF Level 4 Introductory is able to:
  • Identify and solve intermediate visual problems through practical application.
  • Stimulating and developing thinking patterns involving creativity. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    A qualifying learner assessed as competent at NQF Level 4 Introductory is able to:

    1. Reach a level of competency in the application of visual elements in Art and Design.
  • Relate knowledge and skills gained to further training.

    2. Solve problems by generating alternative strategies for dealing with these problems.
  • Solve problems through discussion, knowledge and skill.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:
  • Continuous assessment using various assessment tools such as practical work, written tests, assignments, etc. to build up a portfolio is done in order to compile a mark for the learner.
  • Summative assessment is conducted through an internal assessment verified by assessors and externally moderated by provincial appointed moderators. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Qualifying learners are able to enrol for Level 5: National Certificate Art (Culture and Arts)(Design Studies)(Visual Art).

    2. Articulation with Technikon is possible.

    3. Articulation with other Technical Colleges. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderators are appointed (for each instructional offering) as well as provincially appointed moderators, to ensure standards. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Selected educator staff per institution to be used as internal assessors in a manner which acknowledges the quality management.
