PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide the qualifying learner with the necessary technological and visual skills, experience and value systems to apply knowledge, skills and expertise to the fields of Design, Fine Arts and Crafts. To be suitably equipped to enhance cross-cultural interaction, to utilise opportunities in the market effectively and to encourage participation in life long learning. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

Recognition of prior learning:

RPL will be recognised through a process of assessment of previously obtained skills and knowledge.
  • Level 3 National Certificate: Art and suitable portfolio.
  • Grade 11, or equivalent qualification, with applicable subjects and presentation of portfolio of a standard applicable to this level.
  • Complete an interview and/or assessment. The personal evaluation is done in order to determine whether the prospective learner has the appropriate aptitude, attitude and generic capabilities to successfully complete this qualification.

  • Use computer technology at the required level.

  • Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made.
  • Reflect on and explore a variety of strategies to learn more effectively.

  • Communicate effectively as a responsible individual in a group.

  • Collect and critically analyse information through the effective use of technological skills. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The qualifying learner assessed as competent at NQF Level 4 is able to:

    1. Relate learning to group situations.
  • Relate knowledge and skills gained to access further training.
  • Relate learning to technological skills.
  • Demonstrate a practical understanding of theoretical concepts.
  • Demonstrate the necessary skills required at this level.

    2. Solve problems by means of divergent thinking.
  • Solve problems through discussion and applying to the task at hand.
  • Engage in effective problem solving be effectively and critically collating and evaluating information.
  • Carry out effective problem solving within a group that displays an understanding of the inter-relationships of concepts and social constructs.
  • Use technological skills to visually give evidence of divergent thinking and problem solving.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:

    1. Continuous assessment, using various assessment tools such as written work, practical work and assignments, is done in order to compile an assessment for the learner and is made up as follows:
  • Formative assessment: Class tests and practical assignments are conducted on a continuous basis.

    2. Summative assessment

    Through verification by internal assessors and internal moderation by a panel.

    Moderation by Provincial appointed moderators. Portfolios of work that has been compiled is assessed by the examiner and moderated. The learners will be accountable for self-evaluation exercises for the duration of the learning programme. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Qualifying learners will be able to enrol for level 5 National Certificate: Art (Culture and Arts)(Design Studies)(Visual Art).

    2. Articulation with other Technical Colleges.

    3. Possible entrance into Tertiary institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • All summative assessments must be moderated by a group of assessors. Exit Level must be internally verified and externally moderated by appointed persons, of whom one is an approved practitioner from industry.
  • External moderator/s are appointed to ensure standards. 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Selected educator staff per institution to be used as assessors (back-up) in a manner that acknowledges the quality management.
