PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide the qualifying learner with the knowledge and skills to advise clients with regard to the organisation of interior spaces, the wall finishing and coverings, the colour scheme and accessories. This qualification provides an exit point for integration into the work place or self-employment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners who register for the qualification should have fulfilled all the existing requirements of the previous level.

Recognition of prior learning:

RPL will be recognised through a process of assessment of previously obtained skills and knowledge.

1. Learners who register for this qualification need to present a Level 4 certificate or equivalent qualification.

2. This qualification recognises, through the submission of portfolios of evidence, the formal/non-formal/informal prior learning which learners who register for the programme leading to the award of the qualification bring to the learning situation.

The learner must qualify according to the guidelines of the policy as stipulated in report 191 DOE. This qualification may be achieved in whole or in part through the recognition of prior learning (Regulation 8 (1) (h))

1. Identify and solve problems regarding the arrangement and design of interior spaces, and advise clients, and on the use of materials, and accessories using critical and creative thinking.

2. Work effectively with others as a member of a production team.

3. Organise and manage himself and his activities effectively and responsibly.

4. Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues and suppliers.

5. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information.

Specific Outcomes:

The qualifying learner can:
  • Design and organise interior spaces.
  • Advise clients on colour schemes and use of materials in walls.
  • Can decorate wall coverings.
  • Advise clients on the use of accessories.
  • Be self-employed in a workshop or related industry.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    1. Solve problems regarding the needs of clients, type of materials needed, using critical and creative thinking.

    2. Effectively work in a team with others.

    3. On a day-to-day basis, organise and manage himself/herself and his/her activities effectively and responsibly.

    4. Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues and suppliers in the Interior decorating industry.

    5. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information so that responsible decisions are made regarding the creating and designing of interior spaces.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    Level of competence is industry related.

    There is a focus on implementing knowledge on a practical level as well as practical skills rather than theoretical knowledge.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:
  • Continuous assessment - formative assessment is continuous based on portfolios, assignments, practical work and theoretical work.
  • Summative assessment - is conducted through a national examination
  • Formative and Summative assessment - is integrated by means of a predetermined ratio. This varies to ensure fair, valid and reliable assessment. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. Articulation with qualifications offered at other institutions:

    Articulation possibilities at this level depend on recognition from Technikon and private institutions.

    2. The qualifications towards which the qualifying learner may proceed are:

    Interior Decorating courses, at Technikon or at a private/technical college. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Formative as well as summative moderations occurs. External moderators are selected for their professional expertise as well as educational expertise. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Our own staff will be used as internal assessors in a manner accommodated within the quality management system of the institution, in keeping with the requirement of the industry.
