PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifying learners with:
  • The appropriate competency/credits to enter the Level 5 Business Studies course;
  • Participate in life long learning. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • National Senior Certificate/FET Certificate Level 4

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    The learner must obtain a competency/credit for all four (4) instructional offerings. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    An Introductory N4 level 4 graduate can, at an elementary level, identify, analyse, solve and manage individual and organisational activities.

    Specific Outcomes:

    A Level 4 Business Studies student can demonstrate and comprehend elementary business principles. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Assessment Criteria associated with Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

    Solve problems by means of effective communication, managerial skills and modern technology.

    Assessment Criteria associated with Specific Outcomes:

    Relate learning gained from experience and formal context to a business environment.

    Integrated assessment to ensure that the purpose on the qualification is achieved:
  • Continuous assessment is done in order to compile a semester mark for the learner.
  • Summative assessment is conducted through a National Examination. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    After completion of the Introductory N4 certificate, the graduate can progress to the next level within the appropriate field: Level 5 National Certificate: Business Studies (formerly N4). After completion of the N4 and N5 certificates, the graduate can obtain a National N6 Certificate, followed by a National N6 Diploma, provided that documentary proof of at least eighteen (18) months of applicable experience in commerce and industry (that has as its main function the practical execution of the instructional offering) is produced. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Moderators are appointed by the National Department for Examinations and Assessment (for each instructional offering) to ensure that standards are maintained. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The selected educators, or members of staff, must be registered, accredited and utilised as assessors (back-ups) in a manner which is in line with the relevant quality assurance policy of the institution. The relevant staff must be registered with the South African Council of Educators (SACE) and the relevant legislation as laid down in the Personnel Administrative Measures Document (PAM) must be adhered to.
