PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
This qualification is registered at level 3 on the national Qualifications Framework. It provides learners with the opportunity to access learning in broad Grain handling processes and practices which includes opportunities for learners to grow in the specific field.
Learners will be able to combine fundamental, core and elective unit standards in order to obtain competence linked to best practice. Learners will, once qualified and assessed as competent, be able to demonstrate competence in determining produce grade for maize, wheat, sunflower-seed, sorghum, control stock, combat contamination in grain, providing customer service, inspect stored grain and complete sales transactions. Learners will also demonstrate an understanding of the Grain handling industry. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Learners will have attained a qualification at NQF level 2 on the National Qualifications Framework or have demonstrated competence at this level through recognition of prior learning.

Fundamental: 61 credits
Core: 53 credits Elective: A minimum of 12 credits. Learners have to do 2 elective Unit Standards of which one MUST BE a Unit Standard on determining produce grade. Credit total: Minimum of 126 credits |
EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES |
The learner will have demonstrated an ability to make decisions and consider a range of options after completion of the following unit standards in three specified areas:
Fundamental learning: v Care for electronic equipment and measuring instruments v Literacy and communication at NQF level 4 v Numeracy at NQF level 4 v Use data entry skills to input computer data Core learning: v Determine produce grade - wheat v Determine produce grade - maize v Determine produce grade - sunflower-seed v Determine produce grade - sorghum v Combat contamination in grain v Complete sales transactions v Provide customer service Elective learning: v Provide effective administrative support v Handling cash v Contribute to planning, allocation and supervision of work v Determine produce grade - soya v Determine produce grade - popcorn v Determine produce grade - groundnuts v Determine produce grade - dry beans v Receive, store and handle hazardous materials Note: A learner must select at least two elective unit standards of which one MUST BE an unit standard on determining produce grade. |
ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT:
Learners will produce evidence of the following: v Verbal and written explanations of reasons for adhering to operational- and work site procedures as well as statutory requirements, adhering to specific sequence of operations, taking corrective actions, identifying, recording and reporting deviations and capturing data. v Demonstrations of a range of actions to determine produce grade for wheat, maize, sorghum, soya sunflower-seed, popcorn, groundnuts and dry-beans. v Demonstrations of a range of administrative transactions, receiving, checking, handling cash and credit transactions and applying general safety in the workplace. v Use a range of computer hardware to input data on the computer system, produce basic reports and determine stock levels. |
INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
This qualification is comparable to the Nieu Zealand qualification. |
MODERATION OPTIONS |
Anyone assessing a learner against this qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this qualification, or assessment against this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to agreed ETQA procedures. Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution which is accredited by the relevant ETQA. |
