PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Apply educational knowledge, skills, principles and methods to render a professional service, demonstrating the necessary knowledge, skills, professional thinking, behaviour and attitudes to pursue their profession as nurses, midwives and managers of health care in all the spheres of health care.

The planned combination of learning outcomes are integrated with critical cross-field outcomes for this qualification:
Practical Competency The demonstrated ability/skill to achieve the major Skills/Applied Competency of the qualification. Foundational Competency The demonstrated understanding, by the Learner, of the embedded knowledge that underpins the end result/outcome. Reflective competency The demonstrated ability/skill to integrate or connect our performances and to reflect on, evaluate and adopt the above competencies. To successfully complete the qualification the learner will have to demonstrate his/her learning via module specific learning outcomes as well as critical cross-field learning outcomes. Module specific outcomes will include capabilities relating to module knowledge and the understanding thereof within a specific context, and capabilities relating to integrated knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines within the field. Critical cross-field outcomes will include those specified in the learning outcomes for approved modules in the certificate and as appropriate to the learner's field of practice. 1. Providing, managing and facilitating comprehensive health, nursing and midwifery practice. 2. Analysing documents, reporting accurately and utilising all relevant situational information regarding nursing care of individuals, families, groups and communities. 3. Respond efficiently to emergency and disaster situations to save lives and prevent disability. 4. Conduct research and utilise findings to improve nursing and health care. 5. Manage and maximise the utilisation of resources to improve the quality of health, nursing care and services. 6. Establish and maintain ethical partnerships with other health care professionals. 7. Assume autonomy responsibility and accountability for the effective management of nursing. 8. Maintain professional excellence, credibility and competence. 9. Advocate for the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families, communities and health care providers. The learner will be able to analyse and apply the basic principles relevant to the following: 1. Solve health related problems of individuals, groups, families and communities. 2. Communicate effectively within the health care environment. 3. Utilise technology appropriately in health care and service delivery. 4. Record, report and analyse data to render quality health care. 5. Demonstrate planning and implementation of disaster plans. 6. Do research within a health care team in order to improve or maintain quality care. 7. Participate in promoting appropriate utilisation of human and other resources within the health care system. 8. Establish interprofessional and intersectoral relationships to promote health care. 9. Implement nursing care management activities according to the Standards of Practice and Scope of Practice. 10. Utilise the Nursing Act and the Regulations, the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice of the South African Nursing Council and the body of scientific knowledge and apply the principles of PHC in service rendering, for maintaining professional excellence. 11. Use principles enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa to advocate for the rights of individuals, families, groups, communities and health care providers. |
ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
A learner should provide evidence of learning competency (knowledge, skills and attitude) by means of the following:
1. Comprehensive nursing care plans written according to set standards and incorporating assessment and problem solving steps. 2. Research project conducted in accordance with prescribed research requirements. 3. Community collaboration projects according to prescribed community and professional guidelines. 4. Documents compiled according to legal requirements. 5. Emergency-care procedures written to international standards. 6. Management procedures executed in managing a nursing unit. 7. Policies formulated according to and evaluated against the requirements of the SA constitution. INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT: Competence is achieved, through continuous assessment by demonstrating the ability to achieve the outcomes of the Qualification: 1. Continuous integrated assessment by self, peers and facilitators by way of project presentations, case management reports, discussion, journal writing, simulations, portfolios, clinical workbooks and checklists. 2. Standardised marking of and feedback on assignments, projects tests and examinations. 3. Written and oral test and examinations moderated by qualified academics. 4. Clinical competency tests. 5. Work-place assessments and practical 6. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations in simulation and clinical practice (OSCE). 7. Objective Structured Physical Examinations in simulation and clinical practice (OSPE). ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
Vertical: It gives access to the post-basic programme (specialist), including certificates, diplomas and masters degrees.
Horizontal: Articulation possibilities between exist accredited basic nursing programmes offered at various Nursing Education Institutions in the country. Learners retain credits acquired. |
