PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Learner will be capable of:

Operating a Vehicle Combination in accordance with Legal; Safety; Manufacturer and other relevant requirements and reflect on the manner in which the vehicle is operated. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
What the Learner should know and be able to do, before starting this unit:
  • ABET IV English Literacy
  • ABET III Numeracy
  • Learner will have achieved the Unit Standard: 'Operate a Rigid Vehicle'. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    1. Trailer refers to one of the following:
  • Drawbar trailer with a turn table;
  • Semi-trailer (i.e. a trailer coupled through a 5th wheel).

    2. Trailer must have a minimum mass of 2 tons gvm.

    3. Articulation point refers to any coupling point either through:
  • A fifth wheel; or
  • A turn table of a drawbar trailer; or
  • Couple interface between drawbar and drawing vehicle.

    4. Competence on the driving outcome for vehicles over 3,5 tons gvm, should be assessed on:
    a) At least 2 of the following gearbox types:
  • Synchro-mesh;
  • Non-synchro mesh;
  • Automatic.
    b) At least 2 of the following retardation systems:
  • Engine brakes;
  • Drive line retarders (electro-magnetic and Hydraulic);
  • Exhaust brakes.

    5. Competence should be proven on a loaded vehicle- loaded implies a vehicle loaded to at least 25 percent of its rated capacity.

    6. The learner's portfolio should prove that the learner has accumulated at least 40 hours of driving which includes:
    a) Driving in wet weather conditions - at least 10 hours or practically demonstrated competence.
    b) Mountain/hill driving - at least 20 hours or practically demonstrated competence.
    c) Loading and off-loading in confined spaces - at least 5 hours or practically demonstrated competence.

    7. The relevant Professional Driving Permit, will have to be obtained, before the learner can be credentialled on this unit standard.

    Prepare vehicle combination for a trip. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Vital vehicle components are inspected in a systematic way in order to comply with the Road Traffic Act of 1993, as well as safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components: exterior of vehicle; interior of vehicle; fluid levels; brakes; vehicle equipment and articulation points.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Vehicle inspection is recorded legibly and in accordance with operational requirements/specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. All vehicle defects are identified and reported accurately; comprehensively and timeously, so that the necessary actions to rectify defects are initiated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. All prescribed and or other relevant preliminaries are executed (e.g. brake tests and start up procedures). 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Drive a vehicle combination. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Drive a vehicle combination in accordance with K53, Manufacturer, Legal and Defensive driving requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Vehicle combination is driven and manoeuvred in accordance with the K53 standard; manufacturer specifications and provisions of the Road Traffic Act of 1993. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Vehicle combination is driven to actively prevent accidents; injury to people or damage to property/ vehicle; despite the incorrect actions of others; adverse conditions (Application of Defensive Driving Principles). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Vehicle and cab instruments are monitored for malfunctions and appropriate action is taken, where required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Vehicle combination is parked; shut down and secured in accordance with manufacturer specifications; traffic regulations and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Vehicle combination is driven in a manner which takes cognisance of the articulation point/s. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Reflect on vehicle performance, as well as the manner in which he/she operates the vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Learner is able to explain the effect that each of the weather/road/traffic conditions, as stipulated in the range statement, has on vehicle performance and driver actions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Learner is able to explain the influence of driver actions on the cost effective and efficient operation of the vehicle combination. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Couple and uncouple a drawing vehicle and trailer/s.

    1. Appropriate procedures (according to trailer type) for coupling and uncoupling are applied.

    2. All systems connecting trailer to drawing vehicle are functional when coupling.

    Learner explains how the interaction of the following aspects impact on the stability of the vehicle combination:
  • Mass of individual vehicle units in the combination.
  • Speed of the combination.
  • Direction of travel.

    This unit standard has been replaced by unit standard 123254, which is ''Operate a vehicle combination'', Level 4, 20 credits.

    1. The following assessment methods must be regarded as minimum requirements for the assessment of learner competence:
    i) Questioning
    ii) Practical Driving Test
    iii) Portfolio of evidence of past driving experience as per Range Statement.

    2. Credentialling Certificate must stipulate the following aspects regarding the learner's assessment:
  • License Code;
  • Vehicle make;
  • Type and configuration, used in assessment;
  • Gearbox type used in assessment;
  • Retardation system used in assessment.

    3. If the Learner is assessed on any additional aspects, as mentioned in 2, these will be added to the certificate. No additional credits will be accumulated.
