PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of occupational health, safety and environmental legislation in the transport environment. H/she will also be able to demonstrate an understanding of safe working practices in the transport environment and/or understand and explain emergency procedures.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of transport and logistics. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard will facilitate social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the transport environment.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The scope of this Unit Standard is for any person working in the transport environment where knowledge and application of safety and/or security in the processing and/or movement and/or handling and/or storage of freight procedures.

The context of this unit standard refers to aspects, practices and procedures involving workplace, personal safety and the environment.

The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because a narrow range of knowledge and cognitive skills is applied. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for entry into career - based certification.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
1. The purpose of safety, health and environmental legislation in the workplace is explained according to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Statutory Regulations and the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
2. The employer`s and employee`s rights and responsibilities regarding safety in the workplace are explained in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
3. Safety signs and symbols are identified and its purpose explained in compliance with safety regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
4. The importance of personal protective clothing and safety equipment is explained according to safety requirements. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
5. Colour codes on pipelines are identified and the purpose of each is explained in compliance with factory safety regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
1. Personal protective clothing and safety equipment are identified and its purpose explained according to site - specific safety requirements. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
The identification and explanation include protective clothing and safety gear for the body in general, as well as specifically for the head, eyes, arms, hands, legs and feet.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
2. Handling and lifting techniques of heavy objects are demonstrated according to personal safety principles. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
3. Personal safety practices regarding workplace equipment within scope of work are identified according to standard operating procedures.

Examples: winch, forklift, hyster, conveyer belt, pallet lifter, moterised step, etc.

4. The work environment and equipment is prepared and maintained according to standard operating safety requirements. and described according to standard operating procedures, site - specific safety regulations and environmental legislation.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
1. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the Transport SETA and/or relevant ETQA.

2. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

3. Moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in both individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    Conducting assessments

    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA and be familiar with the full text and subject matter content of the Unit Standard being assessed.

    2. The assessor must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge.

    Methods and tools of assessment:

    The following methods of assessment have been identified as the preferred measurement and assessment of learner competence in the above-mentioned Performance Assessment Criteria

    1. Written tests/ case studies/ projects
    2. Role-play
    3. Structured classroom discussions
    4. Portfolio of evidence

    These methods must be carefully selected based on the purpose of the assessment (For example, the written method could be used to assess knowledge or on-job demonstration for practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods (no less than three of those detailed above) in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes

    The following tools may be used to supplement the above minimum assessment methods:

    Valid, reliable and authentic evidence (presented as a portfolio of evidence) from past achievements and experience may serve to supplement the assessment of applied competence. The portfolio should include inter alia:

    1. Written statements from persons (e.g. current and/or previous employer, colleague, peer, manager, external customers) confirming competence of the learner
    2. Relevant certificates or awards
    3. Previous assessment records
    4. Journals/logbook
