PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are involved in the preparing of Customs entries at Schedule 1 level.

Individuals who are credited with this Unit Standard will be capable of applying information contained in source documents to classify commodities in terms of the Harmonised System.

They will be able to accurately classify commodities within industry acceptable timeframes through the application of the principles and procedures as set out in the Customs Tariff Act, and associated guidelines.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Learners are expected to perform the specific outcomes, as expressed in this Unit Standard, within a highly regulated and structured work environment. Learners are able to select and implement the most effective solution/s to familiar problems, guided by clearly defined industry and legislative practices.

The specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard are performed in a structured work context with supervision, which allows for learners to engage in self-directed activities. Learners are expected to have access to the relevant regulations and legislative rules, guidelines etc...Due to the highly regulated and prescriptive nature of the industry, learners chose responses and solutions to problems from a range of familiar options.

The meeting of time deadlines is critical in the demonstration of outcomes in accordance with assessment criteria, and all assessment criteria must be performed at the required standard, within the time parameter specified.

1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

3. Apply principles and rules contained in the General Notes to Schedule 1 Part 1 of the Customs Tariff and the Explanatory Notes to the Harmonised System to source documentation in determining tariff classifications
