PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are or who wish to be employed in the international trade field.
Individuals who are credited with this Unit Standard will be able to carry out the processes and procedures required for the administration of import transactions. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
IMPEXP 1: Apply a knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms of international trade in a Freight Forwarding Environment
NQF 4 in English and Numeracy 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Learners accredited with this unit standard are not expected to source and negotiate supply contracts and suppliers. The assumption is that learners are provided with all aspects of an import deal - the supplier and price of the product already having been sourced and agreed.

Following a landed costing calculation, however, the learner is expected to be able to demonstrate competence in renegotiating the Incoterms if deemed necessary. On discovery that the landed cost is prohibitive or import regulations preclude the particular transaction, the learner is required to refer these findings back to the sourcer of the transaction.

Outcomes will be judged by whether the learner can:

1. Identify the trade regulations applicable to each transaction and ensure compliance therewith
2. Calculate accurate landed costings
3. Determine the viability of import transactions by evaluating the variables in each transaction
4. Negotiate freight rates and international payment and delivery terms
5. Structure a purchase order in compliance with the principles of supply performance management and the statutory requirements governing the transaction and the international trade logistics and payment parameters
6. Issue legally binding instructions to banks, freight forwarders, clearing agents and insurance companies
7. Manage each import transaction from the time the purchase order is issued until the time the goods are delivered
8. Lodge and administer any claims which may follow delivery
