PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:

Classifying materials correctly and constructing rail girders and cribs in accordance with specifications and relevant instructions. The learner will also be able to assess the quality of the completed work.

This unit Standard will contribute to the full development of a professional community of Rail Construction and Maintenance workers.

The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the Rail Construction and Maintenance environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2
  • NQF Level 2 Language and Communication
  • Educational and Competency Certificate in overhead track equipment 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard:

    Competency must be demonstrated
  • In different weather and environmental conditions.
  • Preferably in day-time.
  • In different yard layouts/mainline/sidings/private sidings/shed/workshop (might or might not include overhead traction and Railway signalling.
  • Within a specific time span.· Different site conditions, e.g. cuttings, embankments, multiple lines, tunnels, sites with restricted accessibility etc.

    The learner has to prove competence in the construction of track support of varying complexity.

    Temporary track support includes the following:
  • Rail girders, including top and bottom girder.
  • Sleeper cribs.
  • Bridging cribs

    Cribs should be constructed under supervision of an expert:

    Handling includes:
  • Storage.
  • Loading.
  • Transporting.
  • Off-loading.
  • Stacking.
  • The use of push trolleys and rail transporters to transport permanent way materials.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Materials (sleepers, clamp, rails and u-bolts) are classified correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Centre of girder is determined and support points calculated correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Existing sleepers are replaced with rail girder sleepers and fastened correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Clamps are installed correctly into track. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Rails are placed on sleepers and clamps fastened correctly with clamps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Ballast are boxed in correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Sleepers are tamped correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Temporary speed restriction boards are erected according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The completed girder is in accordance with company specifications.

    Construct cribs.

    Materials (sleepers, clamp, rails and u-bolts) are classified correctly.

    Fixed points of damaged area are obtained and points from expert on site are supported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Height of crisp is determined correctly and the correct type of crib selected according to plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Crib floor is levelled and compacted and first layer of sleepers are placed longitudinal with railway track. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Sleepers are stacked in accordance with crib type. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The completed crib is in accordance with company specifications.

    Perform post construction operations.
