PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to apply and understand the soil relations, water requirements and the methods for the irrigation of vines.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of soil relations.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of methods of irrigation.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of vine irrigation scheduling.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of soil relations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The movement of water in the soil is explained using own words. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The availability of soil water is explained in relation to the permanent wilting point of field water capacity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The role of soil texture and soil structure is explained in relation to soil water.
    The role of the climate and the concept of evapo-transpiration are explained in own words. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate an understanding of methods of irrigation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The role of roots, leaves and shoots is explained in relation to the vine structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The various stages of irrigation are explained according to irrigation criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Methods of vine irrigation are explained according to industry criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Irrigation methods may refer to flood irrigation, sprinkle irrigation, micro and drip irrigation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The effect of irrigation is explained in relation to the crop yield. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The crop yield may refer to the quality of grapes, sugar/acid concentration, berry size and the harvest date.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of vine irrigation scheduling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. An irrigation schedule is developed to meet water requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The use of irrigation scheduling aids is explained according to irrigation schedule demands. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Irrigation scheduling aids may refer to the evaporation pan, long-term climate data and moisture measuring instruments.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
