PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of different diseases, pests and abnormalities found in vines.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the symptoms of fungi, bacteria and virus diseases.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of pests and diseases identification in vines.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of diseases and pest control.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of controlling methods for abnormalities and damages caused by environmental conditions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the symptoms of fungi, bacteria and virus diseases.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Symptoms for of above ground fungal diseases are explained according to know symptoms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ground fungal diseases may refer to powdery mildew, downy mildew, dead arm, anthracnose, botrytis, sour rot and die-back.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Symptoms for root fungal diseases are explained according to know symptoms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Root fungal diseases may refer to phytophthora, black - goo and black foot.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Symptoms for bacterial diseases are explained according to know symptoms. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Bacterial diseases may refer to bacterial blight and crown gall.

    4. Symptoms for virus diseases are explained according to know symptoms.

    Virus diseases may refer to fan leaf, stem-pitting, leaf roll, corky bark and shiraz disease.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Root pests in vines are identified with reference to root pest indicators. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Root pests may refer to phylloxera, margarodes and nematodes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Soil pests in vines are identified with reference to soil pest indicators. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    2. Soil pests may include but is not limited to mealiebugs, ants, snails, beatles, bud mite, birds, red spider mite, friutfly, thrips and spring beatles.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of diseases and pest control.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The influence of the climate on pests and diseases is explained in relation to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The influence of different cultivators on pests and diseases is explained in relation to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The influence of different cultivation practices on pests and diseases explained in relation to criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Chemical control of fungal and bacterial diseases is explained in relation to industry requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fungal diseases may include but are not limited to poedery mildew, downy mildew, dead arm, anthracnose, botrytis, sour rot and die-back fan.
    Bacterial diseases such as bacterial blight and crown gall.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Process and procedures for an integrated spraying program is identified in relation to fungal and bacterial diseases. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Methods for prevention of virus diseases are identified in relation to known prevention methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. The methods for controlling root pests are explained according to according to IPW principles or workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    8. Methods for controlling ground soil pests are explained according to IPW principles or workplace procedures

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Abnormalities in vines are identified according to known abnormalities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range: Abnormalities may include but are not limited to colombar diseases, heat spot on muscot types, chimeros and herbicides damage.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The control practices for vine abnormalities are explained according to industry practices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Environmental conditions causing vine damages are identified in own context. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Environmental conditions may include heat, damage, sunburn, wind, frost, hail, sulphur burn, brack, waterlogging, drought, air pollution and delayed budding.

  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
