PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to administer the appropriate feed to farm animals in accordance with planned diet.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different types of feed for farm animals.
  • Select suitable feed for farm animals.
  • Maintain conditions required for storage of animal feed.
  • Feed farm animals according to workplace procedures.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of different types of feed for farm animals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Types of feed for farm animals are identified within scope of work. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of feed may refer to complete feed, concentrate, concentrate mixed with maize.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The difference between an ingredient and a mixed feed is identified in relation to origin. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Forms of feed and the best suitable animals for the feed are identified according to animal suitability and needs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Forms of feed may refer to mash, pellets, crumbles and herbage.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Wholesome feed and deviations are identified according to minimum feed standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deviations may be identified by smelling the rancid or rotten feed.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Maintain conditions required for storage of animal feed.

    1. Animal feed is prepared for storage according to workplace procedures.

    2. Animal feed are stored and controlled according to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Storing conditions may refer to clean, dry, free from rodents and weevils.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Feed farm animals according to workplace procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    2. Feeding and drinking troughs are prepared and filled according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The appropriate feed for farm animals are selected according to animal needs and workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Eating and drinking deviations in farm animals are reported according to workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Direct observation in simulated or actual work conditions.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.

    The learner will be able to use science and technology effectively during the feeding and maintaining the quality of the animal feed.

    The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO CONTRIBUTING 
    The learner will be able to contribute to the full development of him/herself by administering the appropriate feed to farm animals in accordance with a planned diet.

    Workplace procedures refer to place of work procedures, animal health -, personal, equipment and environmental safety procedures, best practices and applicable legislation.
