In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people who use basic tables and graphs to make sense of, represent and analyse information. People credited with this unit standard are able to extract, record, organise, interpret and represent information using tables and graphs. People also understand the uses of tables and graphs and can select appropriate representations in terms of the information.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
'Extract and use information derived from simple tables and organise information into tables'

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Tables and graphs display information of an everyday nature, and in such a way that information can be accessed directly. Scales and keys are clearly displayed and have obvious interpretations.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Extract and record information from tables and graphs.
OUTCOME RANGE
Common tables and bar graphs, line graphs, pictographs and pie graphs.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. All the information depicted in the table or on the graph is correctly read and recorded in accordance with the given data key.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Units of measurement used are in line with recognised conventions and the given data key.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. The information on horizontal and vertical axes is correctly matched.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Answer simple, relevant questions related to tables or graphs.
OUTCOME NOTES
Use the information derived from tables and graphs to answer simple, relevant questions related to the tables or graphs.
OUTCOME RANGE
Bar graphs, line graphs, pictographs and pie graphs.
Tables include calendars, timetables and information charts.
Questions are limited to those that can be answered directly from the provided information.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Answers accord with information provided on the graphs or tables.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Answers are justified in terms of the visual representation of the information and are consistent with the message conveyed by the entire graph or table.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Solutions to calculations are consistent with the context.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Explain the use of tables and graphs and represent numeric information on bar graphs and in tables.
OUTCOME RANGE
Information is represented on simple bar graphs and tables which have axes or basic structure provided.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Bar heights correspond to the data being represented and the vertical scale.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Bars are placed at the correct positions in terms of the type of information being represented.
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
On the points, between the points, straddling the points.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Axes are labelled so as to clearly describe the type of information displayed.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. Data keys or scales are clearly shown and the data represented corresponds to this scale.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
5. The overall shape of the graph accords with the information provided.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
6. Tables have clear headings and the information presented under each heading is consistent with the information being represented.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
7. Explanations about the use of tables and graphs describe the power of these instruments to represent a lot of information in short, economic, easily readable ways and distinguish between situations where graphs or tables may or may not be appropriate.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
