In all of the tables in this document, both the old and the new NQF Levels are shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any reference to NQF Levels are to the old levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard will be useful to anyone involved in measuring and calculating measurements in everyday contexts. People credited with this unit standard are able to measure, estimate and communicate length, volume, mass and time using simple measuring instruments and the language of measurement. People are also recognised for their ability to use measurements to solve basic problems.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
'Demonstrate and apply understanding of the number system'

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Standard measures for time, length, mass, volume and capacity in everyday contexts.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Measure, estimate and communicate length, volume, mass and time.
OUTCOME RANGE
Measurements are made using simple and easily accessible measuring instruments.
Analogue and digital time is read and used interchangeably.
Units are converted one to another.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Measurements are made to an accuracy as required by the situation and as is limited by the measuring instrument.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Units of measure and their associated abbreviations comply with SI units.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Estimates are justified in terms of the situation and checked using appropriate measuring instruments.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. The size of units used accords with the relevant situation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
5. Conversions between units are correct.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
6. Measurements are communicated using appropriate language of measurement.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Use measurements to solve problems.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Strategies used are consistent with the situation and lead to correct solutions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Appropriate measurements are made and recorded accurately or estimated in accordance with the problem-solving context.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. Relative sizes of units are compared and the equivalence of converted units is demonstrated.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
4. Solutions are consistent with the problem situations.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Evaluation of documentation and visit by SAQA or ETQA expert in the field of mathematics education.

Moderation:
According to system devised by the NSB.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Embedded knowledge is addressed as part of assessment criteria.
Assessment must test the ability to apply measurement concepts in realistic situations.

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Solve problems.

UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, organise and critically evaluate information.

UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematical and language skills in the modes of oral and written presentations.

UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Quality Assuring Bodies have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Quality Assuring Body should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
