PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Assessing and using data for decision making purposes
  • Liasing with relevant parties and stakeholders
  • Monitoring and controlling data gathering process and its results 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Computer literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

  • The following range statements are general to the qualification:
  • A disaster will include any mass fatality beyond resources of normal activities of a funeral company. This type of disaster requires specialists from other disciplines to perform certain duties specific to the severity and size of the disaster.
  • Data will include client files, pathologists reports, identification report, orthodontist report, personal effects, instructions relating to destination, disposition of remains, photographic records, expense records.
  • Resources ad equipment will include vehicles, blankets stretches, body bags, embalmers, embalming equipment, instruments and fluids, tents, tables, catering, ablution facilities, accommodation, lighting, refrigeration, power communication, equipment, protective clothing, water, air conditioning, equipment, protective clothing, water, air conditioning, other disaster teams.

    Relevant parties and stakeholders will include local authorities, police defence, local suppliers of specialised equipment, government departments, embassies, consulates, medical personnel, local funeral practitioners, local religious groups, weather bureau, press.
