PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to apply an understanding of basic logistics principles within any freight handling operating environment. They will also be able to describe the functions and relationships of different departments and describe their impact on the business as well as the distribution channel.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and explain the functions of the different internal departments.
  • Describing the principles of supply and demand.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the impact of customers on the industry.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the distribution channel.

    It is assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:

    The different departments in freight handling are identified and described with examples in terms of the specific area of specialisation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Area of specialisation - stevedoring; airfreight; warehousing and distribution; pipeline; ports; courier bulk operations.

    The key functions of the different departments are listed and explained with examples of each function.

    The Freight Handling infrastructure for each area of specialisation is described according to freight handling requirements.

    The key parties impacting supply and demand are identified from a list of parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Demand alignment is defined according to international definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance of demand planning for operations is explained with examples of the consequences of not doing demand planning and alignment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    An example of demand planning in the workplace is shown (e.g. extra staff over the Christmas/other busy period) in accordance with requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of logistics business impact.

    The Customer Value formulae are applied in order to demonstrate the impact of a change in the variables on total logistics cost. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    Customer differentiation is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Key drivers of enhanced customer relations are identified and explained according to customer requirements.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the distribution channel.

    The specific Distribution Channel is defined according to international definitions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The key players/composition of the specific distribution channel are defined and their roles are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measuring the efficiency of the Channel is demonstrated in a practical exercise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of knowing what the distribution channel looks like can be explained with an example. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The benefits accruing to all parties within the distribution channel can be explained with a list of the benefits.
