PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able identify correct means of transport for a particular mobile elevated working platform. Learners will also be able ensure a MEWP is safely loaded and off-loaded onto vehicles and conduct tie-down and release procedures.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and determining correct means of transport for mobile elevated working platforms.
  • Conducting pre-trip planning.
  • Loading and off-loading mobile equipment onto vehicle.
  • Conducting tie-down and release procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners assessing this unit standard are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    Identify and determine correct means of transport for mobile elevated working platform.

    The different types, abilities and applicabilities of transport vehicles are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Matching the specific mobile elevated working platform to a specific vehicle is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The selection of a specific vehicle is motivated with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct pre-trip planning.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Trip requirements are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Trip requirements may include but not limited to route, escort requirements, overhead and structural clearances, legal requirements.

    The trip is planned according to company, safety and route requirements.

    Escort requirements are determined according to size of load and route limitations.

    The proposed trip plan is communicated to all involved according to organisational requirements.

    Responsibilities of person in charge are explained according to legislative requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Load and off-load mobile elevated working platform/s onto or off transport vehicle.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Loading site is evaluated for suitability and the transport vehicle is positioned accordingly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Mobile elevated working platform/s loading sequence is planned in accordance with loading criteria and legal requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Loading criteria may include but is not limited to; 'last out - first in-principle', legal requirements in terms of gross vehicle mass and axle loading.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Transport vehicle is loaded according to operational, safety and legal requirements using the appropriate means. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of the load positioning and type on the stability of the vehicle is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Safety problems associated with the transportation of the load are identified for specific contexts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct tie-down and release procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate securing equipment is selected to secure the mobile elevated working platform. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Selection of securing equipment may include but not limited to: MEWP requirements, type of vehicle, legal requirements and expected weather conditions on route.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate securing equipment is utilised in a safe manner and in accordance with type of MEWP and vehicle requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Securing equipment may include but not limited to; chains, lashing, webbing, protective equipment and restraining equipment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    On-road problems which may occur are identified and explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    On-road problems may include but not limited to; shifting load, height restriction, width restriction, road surface and weather conditions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Methods of dealing with on-road problems are described with examples.
