PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand issues related to the insurance of internationally traded goods whilst they are in transit from seller to buyer. The learner will also be able to ensure that the interests of the shipper and receiver clients are protected by appropriate insurance measures. The learner will also be able to process and report on situations related to insurance of goods in transit.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Determining the transit risks and advise accordingly.
  • Arranging appropriate transit insurance for international cargo.
  • Administering transit insurance on behalf of cargo owner.
  • Administering insurance claims procedures.

    International purchasing documentation is checked for verification purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The status of the insurance cover is verified according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The risk is identified against shipping terms and client is advised of the identified cargo performance risks. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cargo performance refers to the movement of cargo between handover points.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consequences of insufficient or incorrect insurance cover are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Arrange appropriate transit insurance for international cargo.

    Transit risks are assessed to determine the requirements of the client.

    Suitable service providers are identified according to the needs of the client.

    The services of a suitable service provider are acquired according to the needs of the cargo, the client and applicable legislation.

    The consequences of arranging inadequate or inappropriate transit insurance are explained with examples.

    Administer transit insurance on behalf of cargo owner.

    Reports are made of any and all irregularities in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Consequences of not reporting irregularities are explained with examples.

    Loss or damage to cargo is identified by notification.

    Records are created and maintained in accordance with statutory and organisational requirements.

    Claims documentation procedure is applied in order to start the claims process.

    The consequences of not following claims procedures are explained with examples.
