PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the preparation of freight for transportation, excluding bulk freight, within all modes of transportation. A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to sort, pack and load freight for transportation.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Preparing items for packing.
  • Packing items.
  • Wrapping items.
  • Identifying and label items. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is desirable for learners wishing to achieve this unit standard to be competent at:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at ABET Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard is for any person working in the transport environment where knowledge and application of preparing freight for transportation procedures is a necessity.

    The context of this Unit Standard refers to aspects, practices and procedures involving the preparation of freight for transportation safely and economically.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard is appropriate because a narrow range of knowledge and cognitive skills is applied. The application of this Unit Standard is to qualify the person for entry into a career based certification. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    Prepare items for packing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safe working procedures and housekeeping practices are applied according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Items are categorized according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of categories include, but is not limited to:
  • Fragiles, valuables, dangerous, items requiring wrapping, items to be packed upright and perishables.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Items are allocated according to client requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The numbers of items that need to be packed are identified and any deviation from the operational instruction is communicated according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The quantity and type of packing material and packing tools required are identified and prepared in relation to the packing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    An inventory of items is compiled using organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Defects and damages are identified and recorded in accordance with organisational requirements.

    Items are wrapped and stacked in containers according to organizational procedures.

  • Carton boxes, wooden crates and plastic crates.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fragile, perishable and valuable goods are packed and labeled according to organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Dangerous goods are labeled and kept separately in accordance with organisational and industry requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    General goods are packed into the appropriate containers for transportation Purposes following organisational procedures.

    Range of general goods includes, but is not limited to:
  • Items that do not fall into the category of fragile, perishable, valuable and dangerous goods.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Goods are condensed correctly in containers to ensure movement is prevented following organizational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Container is sealed correctly in terms of manufacturer's instructions.

    Items are checked for defects before wrapping following organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Defects are recorded on inventory and deviations are reported following organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appropriate materials are utilized for wrapping in terms of the nature of the item. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Additional material is sourced and/or used, to provide extra reinforcement where required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Maximum utilization of space is ensured to meet organisational requirements.

    Documentation related to the prepared freight is completed according to organisational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.
