PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to determine material needs and analyse overseas supply contracts in order to recommend alternative methods of shipment to the client. The learners will be able to determine tariffs and costing estimates for clients and to submit applications regarding import control to the relevant parties. Learners will also be capable of compiling import orders and distributing these timeously to all the roleplayers. The learners will be able to communicate foreign exchange commitments to affected parties and obtain approval for forward cover where required. Learners will also be able to effect the relevant transit insurance and compile and submit relative letters of credit.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Planning an import transaction.
  • Carrying out an import landed costing.
  • Applying for statutory approval.
  • Preparing and distributing import orders.
  • Arranging import forward exchange cover.
  • Arranging transit insurance cover.
  • Applying for letters of credit.

    Import insurance claims are processed in order to compensate for transit losses.

    Progress of the establishment of the letter of credit is monitored in order to effect finalisation.
