PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This standard forms part of the activities of a ramp handling agent. Learners studying towards this standard will be able to load and unload main deck freighter aircraft using the appropriate sequence and equipment. They would also become familiar with the function and programming control panels.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the importance of load and unloading sequencing.
  • Explaining the function and programming of control panels inside the main deck.
  • Loading and unloading pallets.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of loading and unloading sequencing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Loading instruction report or container pallet message (CPM) of different aircraft is interpreted to ensure clarity.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The consequences of not loading/unloading in the required sequences are explained to emphasize the impact on time and ramp management.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain the function and programming of control panels inside the main deck.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Master cargo control panel, side door control panel, 20 foot cargo control panel, remote control panel and the auxiliary control panel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The functions of the control panels are described in terms of their differences.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Control panels are programmed and activated according to standard operating procedure.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Master cargo control panel, side door control panel, 20 foot cargo control panel, remote control panel and the auxiliary control panel, percentage mean aerodynamic chord (MAC).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Load and unload pallets.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Nose door, side door, ten-foot, 20-foot and abnormal loads.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Ten foot pallets are loaded/unloaded at side and nose door according to standard operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Twenty foot pallets are loaded/unloaded at side and nose door according to standard operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Twenty foot pallets with abnormal loads are loaded/unloaded at side and nose door according to standard operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Alternate aircraft types requiring the use of forklifts, gantry and ramps are loaded/unloaded according to standard operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Manual loading/unloading is demonstrated so that the activity can be performed in the absence of electrical power.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
