PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of surveying techniques and principles as used in the construction industry. They will be able to use a measuring tape, spirit level and theodolite to set out construction work areas. These competencies complement the other core supervisory competencies and contribute to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Supervisors.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Understanding surveying techniques and principles.
  • Setting out works using measuring tapes and a spirit level.
  • Setting out and checking levels and profiles.
  • Setting out work areas using a theodolite.

    Understand surveying techniques and principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    Surveying techniques and principles are explained in relation to setting out and international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reference and survey control systems are explained in relation to setting out and international standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of control systems include, but is not limited to:
  • Co-ordinate stations, benchmarks, grid lines, centre lines, reference points, boundary pegs.

    Techniques for setting out positions, levels (elevations) and slopes from established points are explained according to established code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Specific information regarding dimensions and positions for surveying captured from drawings.

    Survey errors are identified and explained in accordance with surveying principles.

    All surveying and setting out activities are checked to comply with survey information and drawings.

    Information from plans are examined and conformed for accuracy relating to the setting out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Horizontal control points are located and confirmed according to reference points. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Works are set out in accordance with drawings and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All surveying and setting out activities are checked to ensure compliance with survey information and drawings. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
