PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the safety in society environment to Apply advanced offensive driving skills.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply offensive driving skills when negotiating static hazards/dealing with vehicle damage.
  • Apply offensive driving skills in dynamic situations.
  • Demonstrate high speed turning skills. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Knowledge about traffic regulations.
  • Meet the requirements of being a safe driver to obtain a valid driving license for a motor vehicle.
  • Apply advanced defensive driving skills and techniques. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to individuals who are required to perform advanced offensive driving under the following conditions:
  • Variable lighting and visibility conditions.
  • Front or rear wheel driven vehicles.
  • Code B class vehicles.
  • Different road conditions (wet and dry).
  • Different transmission systems. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Apply offensive driving skills when negotiating static hazards/dealing with vehicle damage. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Static hazards can be:
  • Adverse road/environmental conditions.
  • Kerbs and sidewalks.
  • Potholes and surface problems. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pavement Climbing is explained and demonstrated without loss of tyre pressure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Steering and braking control is demonstrated by bringing the vehicle to a standstill after a sudden onset of reduced visibility. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Methods for dealing with run flats are explained and demonstrated without compromising safety. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply offensive driving skills in dynamic situations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Dynamic situations refer to changing conditions or situations involving more than one vehicle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ramming is demonstrated and completed without loss of own vehicle mobility. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ramming refers to:
  • At least one of:
    > Left front of vehicle to right side of hostile vehicle.
    > Right front of vehicle to left side of hostile vehicle.
    > Left and right side of vehicle to engage a multiple hostile vehicle situation.
  • Loss of vehicle mobility refers to:
    > The vehicle remains under control and can travel further.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The hostile vehicle is rammed at the rear to cause a spinout to the hostile vehicle without losing control over own vehicle. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The disadvantages and counter measures related to airbag deployments during ramming situation are identified and explained according to the ramming situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The disadvantages and counter measure related to "traction control" fitted to vehicles are identified and explained according to ramming situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate advanced turning skills.

    180° reverse turn is demonstrated and completed within a safe time limit. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Time limits refer to:
  • Vehicle may not be stationary at any given time for a period exceeding 8 sec.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    90° handbrake turn is demonstrated and completed within a safe time limit.

    Time limits refer to:
  • Vehicle may not be stationary at any given time for a period exceeding 8 sec.
     


  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Candidates are assessed against these assessment criteria. An assessor will use suitable assessment methods to assess the candidates in accordance with the principles of assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
