PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:

Fabricating a work piece by applying basic hand skills. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have :
  • Literacy, numeracy and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 1
  • Attended a course on maintenance and using of basic tools and equipment.
  • An understanding of General Safety in the work place at NQF level 1 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this unit standard deals with hand skills related to fabricating work pieces and using of hand-and power driven tools.

    The specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard are performed without direct supervision, but with access to work-site procedures and operating instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare for fabricating a workpiece 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Reading and interpreting job instructions and determining a sequence of operation according to work-site procedures.
    Identifying and selecting appropriate tools, equipment and materials according to work-site procedures and job requirements.
    Selecting appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) according to statutory requirements.
    Determining safe working practices and correct methods.
    Reporting faulty and damaged tools and equipment.

    Consequences of not identifying appropriate tools, equipment and materials, are explained
    Purpose of marking-off of work pieces is explained
    Observing that cutting, filing, drilling and tapping procedures are adhered to according to job instructions, safety and quality requirements
    Reasons for checking work pieces according to job instructions and quality requirements, are explained
    Reasons for cleaning and storing tools and equipment are explained
    Observing that work-site is restored to a serviceable condition according to work-site procedures
