PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:
  • Joining metals using oxy-fuel gas welding processes. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have:
  • An understanding of OHS Act;
  • Identify, select, use and care for tools and equipment;
  • Use agricultural engineering materials;
  • Literacy, numeracy and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 1;
  • Attended a course on Introduction to the Agricultural machinery industry;
  • An understanding of General safety in the work place at NQF level 1;
  • Knowledge in avoiding welding hazards (F1/04/CC/1). 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this unit standard deals with Acetylene and L.P. gas, mild and low carbon steels in the context of a workshop environment.

    Metals to be welded include but are not limited to: Mild and low carbon steels.

    Main application of gas welding at this level includes: Welding of scrap metals, welding to marks on plates, pipes, sections andtrimming panels.

    Defect and hazards to be identified include but are not limited to: Poor connections, damaged hoses, incorrect handling and storage of cylinders, faulty equipment, leaking gauges and flashback arrestors.

    The specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard are performed without direct supervision, but with access to work-site procedures and operating instructions.

    Quality procedures include but are not limited to: I.S.O. 9000

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to an assessor accredited by SETASA.

    Any training provider offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered and accredited by SETASA.

    Moderation of assessment will be done by SETASA in its ETQA capacity at its discretion.
