PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical engineering and construction environment. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
Select, install, connect, commission and do fault finding on a range of single phase A.C. machines and control gear according to statutory requirements.
This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction.
The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:
  • Introduction to industry (work environment)
  • Applicable statutory requirements
  • Use of relevant testing and measuring equipment and hand tools / power tools

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Single-phase AC machines and control gear may include, but are not limited to: induction and universal motors, alternators, induction / universal motors for use in hazardous areas, direct on line / sequence / forward and reverse / auto transformer control units.
  • Testing and measuring equipment include but is not limited to: multimeters insulation tester, clip -on-ammeter.
  • Statutory requirements include but is not limited to OHS Act, SABS 0142, Local Authority requirements, manufacturers specifications and worksite procedures.
  • Testing and measuring equipment approved for use in hazardous areas include but are not limited to mulimeter (ohms, volts, amps), insulation tester, voltage line tester, clip on ammeter.
