PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering; Generation; Distribution; Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector .

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
Fault find, test and repair domestic appliances.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Safety precautions when working on live electrical equipment
  • Single phase motors and control gear, heating elements and controls, test instruments, circuit / wiring diagrams and function of components. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Repairing small appliances, stoves, washing machines, tumble driers geysers, heaters and dishwashers. Repairs are done in accordance with manufacturer`s manual.

    Plan to do fault finding and repair to domestic appliances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Appropriate plans and circuit diagrams for the appliance to be worked on are selected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Circuit diagrams are interpreted according to specified task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Component function in circuit is interpreted according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Tools and test instruments to be used are selected according to specified task. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct fault finding and testing of domestic appliances.

    1. Appliance are inspected for visible damages.

    2. Appliances are tested in correct sequence.

    3. Faults are located and corrective action identified with the aid of wiring diagrams.

    4. Circuits are checked for loose or broken connections according to worksite procedures.
