PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Clothing Processes. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to handle, select and store materials used in clothing manufacturing processes. Learners involved in any elective area will use this standard.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification and will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Learners will also communicate verbally and in writing at ABET Level 4.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The standard applies to cutting, sewing, finishing and product development in the clothing sector in South Africa.

Identifying and inspecting the materials against specifications and procedures.

1. Demonstrate and explain how the materials are inspected, measured, identified, stored and processed as per any relevant documentation.

2. Demonstrate the ability to prioritise the workload, by producing a basic schedule, detailing the appropriate documentation and materials flow (including recording).

3. A practical demonstration of the uses of measuring equipment and techniques e.g. weights, scales, calculators, tapes etc.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Learning programmes will be accredited by the relevant Sector Education and Training Authority and any Education and Training Quality Assurance Bodies in place. Qualified assessors will assess competence against this standard.

Industry terms and terminology.

Regulations around storage.

Policies and procedures relating to documentation and material flow.

Different measuring techniques including tape measures, weights, scales etc for different components.

Names of different materials component parts that make up the product e.g. zips, buttons and inter-linings.

The techniques to accurately record and physically account for material and stock.

Demonstrate an understanding of the environment as a set of related systems in order to apply industry terms and terminology, relevant regulations, appropriate techniques, policies and procedures and thereby be effective in ones workplace.
