PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Learner will be capable of:

Understanding the significance, as well as the role of Road Transport, within the Macro Transport Industry, as well as National and Provincial economic dispensations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of Road Transport Legislation and Regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Current Legislation and Codes applicable to the Road Transport industry are identified in terms of the stated purpose as well as how they relate to driving. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legislation and Codes include, but are not limited to:
  • Relevant Road Traffic legislation (Nationally, Provincially and Municipal)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act 1993
  • Road Accident Fund i.t.o. Act 56 of 1996
  • Industrial Collective Agreements.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Learner is able to access information from Legislation and Codes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Learner is able to identify the categories of licenses, as well as Professional Driving Permits and relate these to the vehicles they apply to. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of Road Transport Operations in South Africa.

    1. The relationships between Road Transport and other modes of transport are explained in terms of the flow of Freight; Passengers and Services. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The volume of Passengers and Freight carried, as well as the number of people employed in the Road Transport Industry, are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The advantages to customers in using Road Transport, are stated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Reflect on importance of Transport in terms of National and Provincial economy and how it interfaces with other Industries. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The Road Transport Industry as a Service Industry is understood. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate knowledge of features of the South African Road Transport Industry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Types of Passenger services are described in terms of their role in the movement of people and the type of vehicle used. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Scheduled urban bus service; Intercity route services; Tour coach; Charter coach; School Bus; Shuttle service; Taxi service.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Types of Freight delivery services are identified and related to the vehicle configuration required for their provision. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    General Freight; Furniture Removals; Bulk liquids and gases; Livestock; Refrigerated cargo; Logs; Abnormal freight; Courier goods; Containers; Concrete vehicles. Evidence is required for eight types.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Reflect on the costs associated with the operation of Road Transport Services.

    1. Costs associated with the operation of Road Transport Services are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Strategies for cost reduction are identified in terms of the driver's role in a Road Transport Operation.
