PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is useful for people who work, or intend to work, in a manufacturing environment. It will be especially useful for operators who make, or assist in the making of, chemical products.

This unit standard will contribute towards the achievement of a National Certificate in Chemical Manufacturing at NQF Level 2.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to weigh raw materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The correct production schedule specifying the product variant and batch size is available and in time for weighing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn so that it protects the operator and prevents the raw materials from being spoiled. All protective equipment is worn or used as described in the maker's instructions, company policy and safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Sufficient ingredients of the correct specifications for weighing are available in to meet scheduled and anticipated production. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specifications: colour, odour, visual (unbroken bags), approval status, scheduled light sensitive, expiry date.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The equipment and containers used for weighing are free from contamination, in good working order, fit for purpose, and in sufficient quantity for scheduled production. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment: Scales, pre-weighing containers, calibrated/verified, scales tared to pre-weighing containers.

    5. Lifting and handling techniques used during preparation are in accordance with best practices so that the chances of injury are reduced.

    1. Ingredients are weighed according to Company and legislated requirements, and stored in containers in such a way that they are not spoiled or contaminated with other products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Weighing is carried out ensuring that the waste of ingredients is kept to a minimum. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Any spilled ingredients are disposed of in accordance with company SOPs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Weighed material is identified in accordance with SOPs in a manner that ensures required information is accessible and easily understood.

    5. Forms or checklists that report on pre-weighing are accurate and up to date and complete, in accordance with Company procedures.

    6. Problems occurring during the weighing operation are recorded and either reported to the designated personnel or dealt with if in the scope of the operator.

    1. Weighed material is moved to the manufacturing site/next step in the process according to SOPs in a manner that ensures no damage to material, individual plant or equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The supply of ingredients to manufacturing is consistent and on time. The movement is managed so that equipment, time and effort are put to best use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The supply of ingredients to manufacturing meets production requirements for the variant type being produced, and complies with Company policies, procedures and legislation.

    Conduct post weighing processes.

    1. Documentation is completed accurately and in accordance with company policies, procedures and legislation.

    2. Where weighed raw materials have not been transferred, they are secured separately in demarcated areas to prevent cross contamination, or stored in the correct manner, according to Company policies, procedures and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The weighing equipment is cleaned, checked for defects and stored after use, in accordance with company SOPs. Defects are recorded and reported to company personnel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The meaning of non-restricted or restricted raw materials is explained and examples provided of both types of raw materials, in terms of relevant legislation.

    Legislation, regulation and instructions applicable to the industry and site where learning takes place.

    5. Site specific terminology relating to weighing of materials is explained so that it is clear that any different terminology used in the unit standard is understood and cross-correlated appropriately.

    The Educational Training Quality Assurance Body (ETQA), for the Chemical Industry in consultation with GEN/FETQA will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard and will register assessors. They will also appoint the internal and external moderators.
