PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a commercial cleaning environment. Qualifying learners are capable of cleaning upholstery using the wet foam-wet extraction method. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
The learner has the speaking and listening ability equal to an ABET Level 1 Com 101 standard and/or any other communication skill that will enable him/her to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard and will have successfully completed the following unit standards:

Identify surfaces, soilage and its cleaning procedures (No. 12515)
Vacuum clean dry surfaces (No. 12526)
Remove spots from upholstery (No. 12531)
Clean carpets using spray extraction. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. The scope of this unit standard is for any person who needs to clean upholstery by using the wet foam-wet extraction method.
2. In the context of this unit standard, chemicals refers to detergents with low foaming, soil retardant, low residue characteristics with a pH value between 5.5 and 8.5.
3. In the context of this unit standard, upholstery includes but is not limited to upholstered furniture and fittings in buildings, motor vehicles, and aircraft and boat interiors.
4. The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, requires critical thinking, problem solving ability, and an ability to work with others as a member of a team.

    2. Cleaning equipment and accessories refer to, but are not limited to, pre-spraying appliances, soft bristled hand brushes, spray extraction machines fitted with an upholstery nozzle, nap brushes, absorbent cloths and buckets.
    3. Fibres refer to natural and synthetic upholstery fibres.
    4. Damage refers to but is not limited to pulled threads, fabric not attached to the frame, worn and/or torn areas, damaged zips and colour runs.
    5. Material below the fabric refers to but is not limited to foam, wadding, metal, upholsterer`s markings and glue.
    6. Nap refers to the short, raised fibres on certain types of upholstery fabrics (e.g. velvet).
    7. Natural fibres refer to wool, cotton, silk and linen.
    8. Pile refers to the cut or uncut loops on certain types of upholstery fabrics.
    9. Spots refer to deposits of soilage or spillages that can be removed from upholstery.
    10. Synthetic fibres refer to but are not limited to nylon, polyester, polypropylene, viscose, rayon, artificial leather and acrylic.
    11. Upholstery that could be damaged by cleaning using the "wet foam-wet extraction" method refers to but is not limited to Chintz and Haitian cotton.
    12. Weave refers to either flat weave or pile fabrics.
