PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to cut upper components by hand or by using a range of machines and equipment through identifying and selecting appropriate machines and equipment, cutting bottom components by hand and using a range of machinery and equipment as well as selecting and preparing consumables. Learners will also be able to apply work instructions. Learners involved in clicking will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification and will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Learners will also communicate verbally and in writing at ABET Level 4.

Machines and equipment used to cut materials will include:
  • Clickers' knives.
  • Clickers' boards.
  • Bound and unbound patterns.
  • Awl.
  • Dies.
  • Press knives.
  • Rap stick.

    The operation of clicking machines to cut materials for uppers will include setting and adjusting.
    Consumables used when cutting materials for uppers will include:
  • Paint.

  • Pencils.

  • Clicking blades.
    Hand operations will include:
  • Stacking.
  • Size painting.
  • Counting.
  • Stain edges.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identifying and selecting appropriate machines and equipment for cutting of uppers used in footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Machine and equipment specifications are defined and understood applying manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Machines and equipment are identified and appropriately selected for the cutting of uppers in accordance with standard operating procedures and job cards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Cutting upper components using a range of machinery and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Upper components are cut in accordance with safety policies and procedures and standard operating procedures using appropriate machines and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. A pair of basic uppers of no less than 6 components per pair is cut together with appropriate linings and components while operating machines in compliance with standard operating procedures and Manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The ability to assess the condition of press knives, cutting block and machine is demonstrated in accordance with safety legislation, and standard operating procedures and machine supplier specifications.

    Cutting upper components by hand.

    1. Upper components are cut by hand safely applying safety policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The reasons for using hand versus equipment for upper components are clearly understood. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Selecting and preparing consumables for cutting uppers used in footwear manufacturing.

    1. Consumable specifications are identified and their purpose is clearly understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Appropriate consumables are selected using job cards and standard operating procedures in preparation for the cutting of upper components. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Applying work instructions to cut a range of upper components. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    1. Work instructions and specifications are applied where ranges of components are cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Instructions on job cards are followed sequentially so that defects are avoided at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Shortfalls are recorded and reported to the appropriate person applying standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The sequence of events is recorded in writing from issue of materials to cut components, where the work ticket is analysed and volume of material has been issued in accordance with enterprise and standard operating procedures.

    The relevant Sector Education and Training Authority or Education and Training Quality Assurance Body will carry our accreditation of learning against this standard. Assessment will be conducted by registered assessors.
