PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to maintain and prepare fishing net gear ready for deployment and retrieval of fishing net gear to the vessel. They will also be able to apply aspects of seafood handling specific to net fishing operations.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Maintain fishing nets ready for deployment.
  • Deploy fishing nets.
  • Retrieve fishing nets.
  • Land, contain and sort the catch.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Communication at NQF level 2 or equivalent competence.
  • Mathematics literacy at NQF Level 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Maintain fishing nets ready for deployment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Nets will include mesh nets or gill nets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Nets are checked for serviceability in accordance with standard industry practice and enterprise procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Checking includes, but is not limited to: symmetry of sweeps, bridles, head ropes, foot ropes; rips, holes and worn netting; security of hangings for net and lashings for ground gear and flotation; by-catch reduction devices.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Worn or damaged net components are identified and reconditioned or replaced in accordance with vessel standards and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Components include, but are not limited to: sweeps and bridles, netting material, flotation devices, ballast, hangings, by-catch reduction devices, connecting devices, knots, clips, flags, buoys and droppers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Replacement net components are ordered in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defective net components are disposed of in accordance with environmental protection regulations and enterprise procedures.

    Deploy nets to ensure operating efficiency, minimum environmental impact and minimal interaction.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Net components are connected in the configuration required by the fishing method in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment used to deploy nets from the vessel is operated in accordance with standard safety procedures and enterprise procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Equipment may include, but not limited to: net drums, capstans, line haulers, dinghies.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Nets are deployed in a manner that ensures they are not twisted in order to optimise catch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Nets are deployed in the pattern required by the fishing operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Devices and systems are deployed to minimise environmental impact and interaction with by-catch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The net storage area is cleaned in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures.

    Retrieve nets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Nets are applied to winches or haulers and retrieved in a manner that optimises the catch in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The catch is landed and removed from the nets in a manner that optimises seafood quality in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Nets are disconnected and stowed to ensure ease of deployment and safety of the crew and work area in accordance with enterprise procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Land, contain and sort the catch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Containment devices are prepared to receive the catch in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Containment devices include, but are not limited to: brine tanks, ice rooms, sorting trays, pounded deck areas, fish boxes (wash boxes, exchangeable market boxes, freezing cartons.
  • Preparation includes, but is not limited to: cleaning, disinfecting, assembling freezing cartons, applying freezing carton liners, accounting for exchangeable market boxes, ergonomic arrangement of boxes sufficient for sorting, arrangement of brine tank hatches.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The catch is loaded into the containment devices in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The catch is sorted in a manner that optimises seafood quality and survival of the by-catch in accordance with hygiene requirements and enterprise procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Sorting may be done according to: species, legal length, size, gender, sexual stage, as by-catch, or as seafood for retention.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.
  • Make sure that evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, directness, authenticity, sufficiency, systematicity, openness and consistency.

    The following particular issues should be taken into consideration when assessing against this unit standard:
  • All candidates to be assessed for this unit standard are required to provide evidence of competence (obtained by attending an approved course) in the following:

    (i) Basic First Aid.
    (ii) Fire Fighting
  • Evidence is required with regard to the candidate being medically fit.
  • The importance of both safety and due care and consideration for the environment is to be kept in mind when assessing a candidate for this unit standard.
