PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person ctedited with this unit standard will be able ato describe concepts and chemicals used in the petrochemical process. They are also able to describe safe transfer and storage procedures for flammable cargoes.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic chemical concepts relevant to petrochemical processes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic organic chemistry relevant to petrochemical processes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic thermodynamics relevant to petrochemical processes and interpret a temperature-enthalpy diagram
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic instrumentation relevant to petroleum product transfer and storage
  • Identify and interpret industry specific symbols, signs, and terminology

    The description of the structure of atoms provides definitions of sub-atomic particles, charge, atomic number, mass number and their relationships with one another.

    Metals, non metals, and alloys are classified and described as elements of the periodic table in terms of and their associated properties, and symbols. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ions and ionic compounds are identified and described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Compounds include but are not limited to: Cations, anions, charge, formulae.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The three states of matter are described in relation to typical flammable product cargoes.

    Power of hydrogen (pH) is described and explained in terms of its significance for flammable products.

    The term hydrocarbon is defined and common uses are identified and explained in accordance with accepted industry usage.

    The explanation of basic hydrocarbon terminology is consistent with industry usage and vessel procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terminology includes but is not limited to - isomers, density, viscosity, synthesised, reforming, fractionation, fermentation, cracking, hydration, exothermic, endothermic, incomplete combustion.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The main hydrocarbon functional subgroups are identified and fundamental differences described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    May include but is not limited to - source, chemical properties, physical properties.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic thermodynamic terms are explained, and explanations are consistent with accepted industry usage and vessel regulations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Terms include but are not limited to: saturation temperature, standard temperature and pressure (STP), normal temperature and pressure (NTP), latent heat, sensible heat, superheat, enthalpy, entropy, specific heat capacity, energy, power, force, work, absolute pressure, gauge pressure.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Heat transfer methods are described in relation to their significance for cargoes and the safety of the vessel. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Trasfer methods include but are not limited to: conduction, convection, radiation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The interpretation of temperature-enthalpy diagrams is consistent with accepted practice and vessel requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dryness fraction, specific volume.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate knowledge of basic instrumentation relevant to petroleum product transfer and storage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Units for the reading of pressure and temperature measurement devices are identified and their relationship to each other explained in accordance with vessel operating instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Units include - pounds per square inch (PSI), bar, millibar, Pascals, kg/cm?, mm water, mm mercury, Fahrenheit, Celsius, Kelvin.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operation of basic temperature measurement devices is described in accordance with vessel operating instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Devices include - fluid thermometer, pyrometer, bimetal thermometer, thermocouple, resistance thermometer.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The operation of basic pressure measurement devices is described in accordance with vessel operating instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Devices include - manometer, barometer, Bourdon pressure gauge, transducers, bellows, diaphragm.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The significance of various readings and limits are described and explained in terms of integrity of the cargo and consequences for safety of crew and vessel.

    Identify and interpret industry specific symbols, signs, and terminology.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Specific symbols and signs relating to flammable cargoes are identified, classified and interpreted according to vessel operating requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Signs include but are not limited to -chemical, safety, vessel specific.
  • Classification includes but is not limited to - caution, warning, danger, general attention.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Signage colour usage is described according to vessel and/or industry requirements and regulations.

    Colour usage relates to - safety signs, chemical data, vessel specific.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specific terminology is identified, interpreted and/or explained in relation to particular purpose and application, in accordance with industry usage and regulations.

    Dangers associated with safety signs are described, and the consequences of non-compliance explained with reference to integrity of cargo and safety of vessel and crew.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal protective equipment is identified and described in terms of its intended use and application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes but is not limited to - protective head gear, safety shoes and boots, gumboots, glasses, goggles, face shields, gloves, barrier creams, overalls, wet weather gear, ear protection, respiratory protection, chemical suits.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment and controls are checked and verified to be operational and fit for purpose. Irregularities are identified and reported according to vessel operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Irregularities include but are not limited to - wear and tear, worn out, expiry dates, damage, hygiene, integrity, contamination, set up, location, storage, availability. Registers, testing, audits, replacement.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Selection of personal protective equipment is consistent with established conditions, and equipment is worn and/or used in accordance with procedures, manufacturer`s instructions, and statutory requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Regulations include but are not limited to - safety policies, operations procedures, signage, permit requirements, OSH Act, manufacturer`s specifications.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Care and maintenance of personal protective equipment is consistent with vessel operating procedures and manufacturer`s specifications. The consequences of poor care are explained in terms of personal and crew safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Personal protective equipment is cleaned, stored and/or replaced according to vessel specific housekeeping requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria.     UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
